Anyone know anything about adult pertussis vaccine?

I just heard they are giving all new moms the adult pertussis vaccine in the hospital. I've done some searching and I cannot even find a list of ingredients. Does anyone know anything about it? Risks? Studies on the efficacy of the vax? I have not vaxed my kids, but if it does help reduce risk of transmission to my baby, I might consider it. I am not as worried about myself as I am my children getting a vax.

Any info is appreciated!

It doesn't help prevent transmission. The vaccine is not actually for the pertussis bacteria, it's for the toxoid that the pertussis bacteria makes. The toxoid is what causes the illness. Since you can still carry the bacteria around, it doesn't prevent you from spreading it to other people.

they now know that pertussis antibodies can wear off in as little as 7 years. Think about that. for over 60 years they have been vaccinating infants without any adolescent or adult boosters - meaning that adults have been walking around without 'protection' spreading pertussis freely to all ages all this time. If there is an increase in pertussis infections now, its only because they are now reporting extended coughs as pertussis instead of 'para pertussis' or asthma, or allergies. Why the increase in reporting? Because they know now anitbodies wear off and they want to expand the vaccine market into the adult population. What better way to do this than tell adults they are putting their infants at risk by not gettng the vaccine!

Of course, this is all moot since the vaccine does not prevent transmission of the pertussis bacteria and never has. Pretty nifty how they get away with this. People need to read those inserts very carefully - its really all in the fine print.

I'm bumping this up because I'm researching the matter myself. Apparently, this is being marketed rather aggressively to adults. I just got pitched for it at my recent pap smear.

I find it disturbing that PP mentioned a hospital giving the vaccine routinely to new mothers. The package insert states the following:

Quote:
"It is not known whether Adacel vaccine is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when Adacel vaccine is given to a nursing woman."
One of the major risks is Guillain-Barre Syndrome, for which the Gardasil vax is also getting a lot of attention.

Still researching . . .

I want to know about this too. I have asthma, and any lung-y stuff I catch gets nasty and stays that way for a long time. I've been considering this vax for myself (when I'm not pregnant or nursing a tiny one).

OMG how things are being turned around. In the older days they used to say kids who go through wc one time are pretty much sure of not getting asthma.

If I could make a suggestion to you, keep SA and CLO at home and the very moment you feel that you are getting any lung-y stuff, start taking it big time. I bet you'll fare much better than with an injection that has crap in it that your body will have to fight to get rid of again.

Also, maybe boosting your immune system with super healthy nutrition and lung strengthening exercises. You may be doing that already, I am just saying...

Well, I have SA, but I can't figure out if it's safe to use in quantity while I'm pregnant. I do take a CLO supplement regularly.

What say you?

From everything I have read, when a person is sick SA is safe even during pregnancy and in large doses. The only side effect a person will get is loose stool. That tells one the dose is too large. That is why people always post take it to bowel tolerance.

I took about 10 grams of C each day during my last pregnancy.

It was the only time I have not torn and that was the only "side effect" I noticed from SA.
