Specific Thrush ?s

I have finally concluded that I have thrush and DS has systemic thrush. We when to the pedi yesterday and she agreed that she thought the same. She gave me fluconazole 400mg for the first day, then 200mg for 13 days. She gave ds nystatin, .5ml 4 times daily for 7 days. DS has his entire belly covered in eczema, we have had this for a looooong time and it went undiagnosed. It doesn't seem to me that the nystatin is going to work for the yeast in his gut. I don't understand how such a small amount could possible solve the problem. I asked her if we should do fluconazole and she said that she always tries nystatin first. :/ Is this nystatin stuff really that powerful? He is 6 months of age and we have been struggling with this since he was 2 months. I'm not one to pump my kid full of meds, but at this point I really want to give him some relief. Any opinions? Also, she didn't give me anything for my nipples. :/

Second question. I am planning to wash all ds toys in vinegar water. What is the proper ratio of vinegar to water? I want to give ds a vinegar bath as well. I don't think he has the yeast downstairs, but I just want to do it to be sure. What is the proper amount of vinegar to put in a baby bath tub?

Thanks for your help!!!

So sorry you're dealing with this, Mama! I've been dealing with post-abx thrush here, too.

Personally, I would use the nystatin first. It may or may not be as powerful as you'd like it to be, but it's a step in the right direction (did she give you nystatin cream, for a diaper rash? You can use that on your nipples, if she did). Secondly, I would start an anti-thrush (anti-candida) diet, for you if you haven't started already. (It's awful, terrible, miserable, but that's what will help starve the yeast in you and in your DS, assuming that he is EBF).

It's a great idea to wash DS's toys in vinegar, but I'm not sure I would put in in the bath water, as it might sting. You could, instead, use Grapefruit Seed Extract (not grapeseed), maybe 5 drops in a baby bathtub. Coconut oil and tea-tree oil are great swabbed on his tush both as a prevention and as a treatment for a yeast rash (I mix about 1/4 c. coconut oil in a tupperware with oh...5 or 10 drops TTO). You can also use this combo on your nipples.

Back to the grapefruit seed extract--you can dilute this and swab it on your nipples, and also swab it in DS's mouth before and after each nursing. You can look for a infant probiotic that might give your LO some relief in his little belly. Ultimately, though, I would recommend focusing on killing the yeast in you--if it dies in you, it will eventually die in him.

I'm certainly not an expert, but I've dealt with this alot, so feel free to PM me if you have other questions or just want moral support! HTH!

If you are taking fluconazole and still nursing, then he's getting it through the milk, so why the nystatin? I would instead ask for her to give a script for APNO by Dr. Newman for your nipples (also good for diaper rash). We did 10% vinegar to water, but we didn't bathe in it. For that I would recommend a gentle soap and water only, since you are treating it from the inside out.

Have you read Newman's candida protocol?

When you have finished the fluconazole, I would make sure that you are taking a good probiotic to recolonize (I did yogurt on the drug, but went for supplements after), and perhaps another flush on GSE a few weeks later to get anything that might have survived or a reinfection. I did GSE about every 8 weeks for 7 days for the entire time I nursed, plus probiotics, and it did keep it at bay.

I think I may do this. DD and I have been battling thrush since March, when it appeared out of nowhere when she was 16 mos old, for heaven's sake. It never goes away for long. Ugh.

Good luck, OP.

Did you do internal GSE every 8 weeks or external?

I would do internal and external GSE. Seriously, yeast is so hard to kill.
