Want to make a felted cozy for my klean kanteen

I'm thinking of crocheting it just because crochet is more durable. I know I should make a swatch and felt it but I'm not sure it will help me know how big to make the thing because it's a shaped piece.

So what's the general rule of thumb? Twice the width and twice the length? TIA!

Not sure, but it is a great idea! I have felted a few things though and the nice thing is that you can felt it until it is the right size. So I would just check it periodically during felting until it fits.

I might have to try this

It shrinks more lengthwise than widthwise, and not half as big.
My swatch was 12.5 cm wide and 13.5 cm high. After felting it was 10cm wide and 9.5 cm high. Hope that helps.

I didn't felt mine, but crocheted them in cotton. They have a great texture and look nice...I'd love to see how your's turn out!

Oh cool. The covers look great! Does the cotton make the bottles heavier?? Because I've got lots of cotton scraps lying around.

For what it's worth, you could probably felt the thing right on top of your bottle. It wouldn't hurt the bottle, and you'd be guaranteed not to overfelt it. It's a thought.

Ummm maybe a little tad heavier, but it doesn't bother me or the girls if so, we use them everyday. I think what I used was just sugar and cream...or whatever I usually use to do dishrags and such...a felted one would look really nice too though.

Depending on what size kleen kanteen you use, this felted cozy for a wine bottle might at least give you an idea for size:

or this water bottle cozy

this one looks like it has a kleen kanteen in it:

Haha! I just started a thread like this a little while back! I found some information online that helped...they just recommended that you crochet a large swatch, like you mentioned. Different brands and weights of wool felt differently than each other. This link helped me out a lot as far as figuring out how to approach it. I haven't made them yet...I want to get some handspun wool off of Etsy and make them with that.
