Long Island Mamas??!! - Page 97

hello jugs,

i interviewed dr. uy when i was pregnant. while i liked her personality and her office, i ended up not using her because she was pretty pro-vax. we actually use dr. wightman for my son. she is non-vax friendly from what i've read here, and she is supportive of delayed/selective vax, which is what we do.

i have heard of 2 other doctors recommended in the area: anna schwartz in selden., and nina tomei in huntington. good luck!

I use Dr. Wightman, but I've been thinking of switching. While I love her, the practice she works in is HORRIBLE! I can never ever get an appointment with Dr. Wightman, whether it is a well visit or sick visit. I usually wait 40 minutes in the waiting room, and then 40 minutes to an hour in the exam room. They have residents who work there, so they see your child first, and then you wait 30 minutes until their attending strolls in to confirm their diagnosis. Big PITA, especially if you have a sick child.

steph, ugh, thats horrible (the wait at Stony Brook)... i always have taken my kids to her (wightman) for well visits, never sick, so i didnt know how it was for sick visits. sounds like more red tape. it is hard to get in there to see her, and being seen by anyone besides her is not an option for me either (their ideas are just too far from what i'm looking for). i always schedule my well visits for the day that the interns aren't with her!!!! (i think it is tuesdays but can't recall for sure).

See that's my perdicament: I've been Dr. Wightman's patient for about 4 years but I've never actually met her yet because I never go to the doctor. I've brought my son in for a couple of sick visits 2 years ago (when our pedi was away) but I saw whomever was available. It wasn't a long wait (amazing how quickly they want you in and out when your kid isn't vaxed, lol) but it was painfully obvious that they aren't accustomed to small children. The doctor we saw (can't remeber his name, but he was Filipino) actually asked me why we didn't go to a pediatrician; I was like "Um, this is a FAMILY practice, no?"

Anyway, I'm not having much luck finding a cooperative pedi in my area (suddeny, they all have unvaxed pateints who died of meningitiis) and Huntington is just too far for me. I figure I'll schedule the kids' check-ups with Dr. Wightman a couple of months ahead of time, that way I know we won't be harrassed over vaxes.

I am new here

Hi Ladies!

I am new to this forum and am in the process of interviewing midwives, getting healthier for anticipated pregnancy, etc-
Can anyone take the time to tell me if having a water birth at NCMC is a realistic option. How readily is it available, etc?
We are not interested in the home birth option -so water seems the next best thing! Happy Mothers Day!:

sonograms

One more quick question-
How many sonograms are considered typical and well, reasonable?
I understand that some mamas prefer none at all, yet, we feel one or two are reasonable-Thoughts?
Much Thanks

mental health professional

hey all-
can anyone recommend a good child/family/couples therapist(s)? we've had some on-going issues here, and i think it's time for an impartial third party. ideally, i'm looking for someone who understands and supports ap. thanks!!

SpeechPath: it depends a lot on your provider, and how hands-off they are. If you're having a normal, low-risk pregnancy, *I* personally feel that 2 or 3 ultrasounds is plenty.

Everyone: where in Suffolk County can I find goat's milk? I've only seen it at Wild By Nature, but I'm wondering of their 4.99/quart price tag is a bit high?

Speechpath, I just had a waterbirth at NUMC Feb 26th. It was absolutely amazing, I really loved it and there isn't a thing about the birth I would change. I used Susan Brockman of Gaia midwives and she was incredibly supportive and comforting during my entire labor. I had no problem getting the water birth room, but I have heard that a few times it has been unavailable because 1. it was already in use or 2. there were not enough nurses on the floor (the waterbirth room has its own nurse- I don't know why, mine literally did nothing)... but its their policy. So if you do decide to go with a water birth at NUMC, keep in mind that although you'll probably be able to use the water birth room its not a 100% guarantee.

I had one sonogram, at 20 weeks. I liked having one just to make sure everything was okay... but I think any more than 2 (unless you're high risk) is too much.

Anyway I absolutely loved my waterbirth, it was so calm and peaceful. You should definitely consider it.

i have purchased goat's milk at Trader Joe's. if memory serves, they charge $3.69 for the same container that Wild By Nature sells. i have also seen it for sale at stop & shop or king kullen or somewhere rather standard, but i don't recall the price.

and ... it's not what you asked for, but i noticed that Wild By Nature sells organic, grass fed, non-homogenized cow's milk for $1.99 a half gallon. i am considering trying that out.

okay, scratch that. i am a dufus and misread their prices. organic cow's milk of the homogenized variety is $3.79/half gallon at Wild By Nature and $3.69/half gallon at Trader Joe's. sorry.

Looking for Nassau County playgroup

Hi all. I'm relocating to Nassau County (North Shore) this summer from Arizona. I have a 20 month old daughter, and am looking for playgroups, meet-ups, and other likeminded parents. Anyone out there?

Thanks so much!
Hi Newbeginning. Not sure if you moved yet or not, but I'm moving to Glen Cove with a 20 month old daughter and am looking for likeminded folks. I actually grew up on LI but have been living in Arizona for the past 8 years. I'm excited about the move but a little worried about the culture shock. Crunchy mamas abound out here, but not so much back there. Oh well, at least I know what I'm getting into!

Also, in case you haven't found a ped, I adore Dr. Greg Gulbransen at Oyster Bay Pediatrics. We've spent that past few summers in NY and found him on the recommendation of a lactation consultant friend. We did end up opting to vax, but he was very open to letting us work out our own schedule. Manhasset. Great staff. Easy to get an appointment. Never waited more than 5 - 10 mins.

HI HelenBarbara,
Great that you are around. Maybe we can meet on monday around 10 or 11am? Do you know Venetian Shores Park in Lindenhurst? Starting from saturday a new palyground will be open there, so maybe we can meet up over there? The place looks really nice, my kids can't wait to try out new slides .We are pretty much free any day, so if monday is no good for you we can pick different day.

Venetian Shores

Hi Aneta,
Sorry I missed your post. I can't do the next few mornings - maybe Thurs or Fri. Afternoons are good - 4:30 or so. We like Venetian shores! Could you give me a call to arrange it? 631-539-7370 Helen

Hi Speechpath,

I am new to this forum and pretty much in the same boat as you right now. My husband and I are looking to try and get pregnant around december. I have been researching midwives and doulas as well as trying to get my body prepared for our anticipated pregnancy. We are still undecided if we're going to have a water birth at NCMC or a home birth. Right now my husband is more comfortable with the water birth, but we are still researching our options. A naturopathic dr that i went to recommended Janet Breen as a midwife but I have also heard some good things about the women at gaiamidwifery. Have you gotten any recommendations? Would greatly appreciate anyones input or recommendations. Looking forward to hearing back.
