DH misses the mountains, and I wanna live amongst my fellow hippies

Okay, so I'm really only pseudo-hippie, but anyway... Tell me about the Smokies!!! I'm a life-long Virginian, but dh and I went to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Asheville on our honeymoon, and fell in love with the area. We're trying to put together a 5 year plan that involves finding a community where we can bloom, and dh can have his beloved, and much missed mountain vistas. Tell me about the area! TIA!!

Does anyone know what phone company serves Asheville and surrounding areas? DH has a really good job with Verizon, and if they are the provider, he could just transfer.

ETA, I'm wondering about the land line companies, not wireless. Thanks!

Verizon landline has the area north of Asheville--Weaverville & perhaps Madison County. Asheville city is Bell South/ATT or whatever they are called now...

Odds are good that you would love it here! It's a wonderful place to live & raise a family.

Yes. Both a quick hop and jump on to Interstate 26 (backroads as well). If one was to stay on Merrimon Ave and take it all the way out.. you'd end up in Weaverville.

It's wise to look into those areas. Compared to Asheville, I'm sure the cost of living is much better out that way. Snow (or having four wheel drive) is one thing to consider being out in Madison county though.

Ooh, 4wd. Hadn't thought of that. Thanks, I have been rabidly looking up real estate listings all day! It looks like, in terms of local economy, and housing prices, Asheville itself is a parallel move from where we are (Northern VA/DC 'burbish area), but in Weaverville we might be able to get a little more property, which is DEFINITELY what we want. We're on an acre now, and would like to move to a minimum of 5. I want to be able to walk through the living room in my underwear without worrying about the neighbors, darnit!

Our plan is a "five year" one, but I figure it won't take any less than that to pull up 29 years of roots in one place. I'm sooooo ready! I have lots of good friends here, friendships I know will survive if we move, so I'm not too worried about that, but I'm really, really anxious to escape the more mundane/cringeworthy aspects of my past. I'm sick and f***ing tired of running into my 9th grade science teacher at the grocery store, kwim? I'm ready for something new!

Marshall is pretty and Weaverville adjacent. From either you could be in downtown Asheville in 20 minutes or less.
