WPI tool question

I cannot find the answer online but I imagine there has to be one to my question!

On a wpi tool is there a base thickness for the rod portion? I have seen people say that it's ok to use a pencil or a ruler or thick dowel. Wouldn't a pencil yeiled different results than a dowel equal to a size 10 needle? Does it not matter just as long as you are consistent and use the same thing over and over?

It doesn't matter the diameter of what you wrap it around because you're not counting the length of the yarn, but how many times it wraps around the needle/pencil/big toe. It's more about the "width" of the yarn. Try it around a few things and see if you get the same result.
