dance or gymnastics? - Page 2

My two year old and 4 year old dds both do gymnastics at the YMCA and they just love it. They always have a good time, the teachers are laid back and they really enjoy being around the other children.

Best of all - it's relatively inexpensive. We pay 55$ a month for both girls to go once a week.

I posted about this recently -- and got some good responses.

I really think it comes down to what the child wants to do. After 1 year in dance, my dd wanted to try something different so we did gymnastics this summer; she loves gymnastics. Dance was too repetitious for her -- smaller, more controlled movements and she wanted to *really* move around. The last half of the year her dance class was rehearsing for the spring show so they did the same routine over and over again and dd wasn't learning anything new. She didn't like that. It doesn't mean that at some point she'll want to do dance again, but right now gymnastics is a great outlet for her energy.

My dd is 3 1/2 and is starting her second year of dance. She loves it! And really, that is why I have her in the class. She just lights up everytime she talks about her dance class, the moves, her friends in her class, her dance teacher. And man, you should see her in class. Her face is just pure joy. She really loves to dance! She has also learned a lot of fine and gross motor skills. I know I'm bragging, but her teacher was all excited and said to me this last week, " Did you see C? She was able to do an Irish ( tap move)! I am so proud of her!" DD was beaming.

Oh, and I love that they have a viewing window for the preschool classes. We can see everything and they can see us.

Have you asked them if they have a preference? At the ages they are I am sure they would be able to tell you what they would like to do.

I think I'm going to sign my four-year-old son up for gymnastics. They're having an open house next weekend and then if we sign up, he'll start next Wednesday.

I'm going with an open mind. He loves to flip and roll, so I think he'll enjoy the classes. If the teachers are good, that is.

My ds started with tumbling at age 4 which was really more unstructured dance and some gymnastics. He is now more into cheer with the neighbors girl which is mostly gymnastics with some dance mixed in. So I guess you could say we do a little of both.

word.

Check out both of the programs, they should let you take one lesson for free or have an open house.

My daughter would be in gymnastics right now....except for the problem of the verbally abusive teacher. We found that out from one lesson.

So now she dances and has an awesome, gentle teacher.

Check them (programs and esp. the teachers) out.
