Would I just need to add aplix if I didn't care about elastic in the legs? Or is there an easy way to add elastic to the legs?

Yes, there is an easy way! When I've done this, I've added a casing to the inside of the leg opening, then run elastic through it and tacked the elastic down at the ends. It adds a little bulk to the leg openings, but I think it makes them work a little like a gusset, gives a little lip to keep in messes. HTH!
