What is up-cycling???

Ok, with an eco-friendly web site, I should know this, but lately I've been seeing the word up-cycling being thrown around with re-cycling and reusing. I can't figure it out. What is it????

I will explain via example...

Making a dress or skirt from an old t-shirt would be up-cycling. Turning a pair of jeans into a skirt would be up-cycling.

Hope thats helpful

Why is that "up"-cycling instead of "re"-cycling? Because you are improving it?

Haven't heard this term yet. Love how language continues to evolve all the time. So interesting.

How is up-cycling different than reusing? I imagine since you are changing the use it's not technically the same as reusing a paper shopping bag but it kinda seems the same to me.

Anyone know where the term came from?

hey Natasha! That's a pretty clever siggy you have there.
I'm liking life with three! Nick is so sweet and just giggles all the time. He's a peach. So are you on for four yet?

up cycling is a further definition of recycling. so a part of recycling. and yes it does imply 'up' better.

Thanks - I was about to dip into Wiki until I scrolled down to find that you did.

I personally "upcycle" vintage buttons off of old wool sweaters/clothes that aren't salvageable to wear any longer, etc etc etc...
