our baby is 6 days old and has a v. shallow latch...we are doing tongue and suck exercises...pumping etc...hoping to get her back on the breast soon...for when we are doing bottle feeding what are the best nipples? I am afraid the one we are using is encouraging shallow latch...any thoughts on this?

Many moms find the plain, old, regular nipple works best. It has a longer nipple, to fill the whole oral cavity (inside of the mouth), much like the breast does. And it has a broad base, so the baby will keep the mouth open wider, similarly to what you want at the breast. I would go with a regular flow instead of a slow flow nipple. But when giving the bottle, keep the baby more upright and the bottle parallel to the floor. It allows baby to regulate the flow better. HTH, Sue

Sue, just curious as why you would not suggest a slow flow nipple? I could only find info suggesting slow-flow:

I understand the rational for slow-flow (so baby doesn't prefer the fast flow bottle to the breast) - is there something in this situation that changes that?

Thanks!

oh - and radiowave, have you considered fingerfeeding? The Jack Newman link (above) gives some nice info if you want to try - and I think his website even has a video.

[QUOTE=PatioGardener;11956297]Sue, just curious as why you would not suggest a slow flow nipple?
My suggestion is based on research that was published in the Journal for Human Lactation. If you'd like, I can try to dig up the article and at least PM which issue it was in etc.
My concern with slow flow nipples, is the frustration it can cause babies, and then the parents as well. I also have seen some situations where it slowed the baby's weight gain.
A regular flow nipple, used in a way to let baby pace the feeds, works really well.
My biggest suggestion to the original poster is to keep your supply up, and be seen by someone who can help you soon. It often takes just one feed, with someone showing you how to get the baby on well. hth, Sue

My babe had a shallow latch and we were recommended the breast flow bottles. Worked for us.

We use the Stage One low flow. Good luck, shallow latch= yeowch!

You might want to see an LC and have your baby evaluated for tongue tie. Tongue tie isn't always obvious as there are different classifications/types. Your baby could have a type 3 or 4 posterior, which wouldn't be obvious to you, but would be to an LC. Make sure the LC you see is really well-qualified and comes with good references. Actually, when you make the appointment, ask her if she's familiar with the different types of tongue tie.

In the meantime, I would put the baby to the breast as often and as much as possible. If supplementation is absolutely necessary, try an at-the-breast supplementer (lact-aid or SNS). The only drawback to this is that it will "reward" the baby for a bad latch. You could also try a finger-feeder.

Please see this article. She suggests a long nipple with a narrow base.

Hi I suffer from shallow latches. i had a question does a good latch empty the breast faster and better, unlike a shallow latch. because i breast feed him for twenty minutes on one side and i pump and i still have some milk in there. I don't have much milk, so if i see milk, that can't be a good thing. I've been going threw this for a month now is there any hope in correcting this.

Actually, many women are able to pump more milk after a baby nurses. It's not an accurate way to measure whether the baby is nursing well. If it feels comfortable, and baby is keeping up with about 6-8 wets (5-6 in disposable diapers cuz they're so absorbent) and 3 BMs or so a day for the first month or so (more BMs is okay too), then all is going well. After a month or so, if the baby has less frequent BMs that's not a problem. If a.) it hurts, b.)baby isn't satisfied after nursing a good 30-45 minutes, c.) not keeping up with wets/BMs, then something might be going on. If you're still not sure, get in touch with a local LLL Leader (can find that at www.llli.org) or an experienced LC. HTH, Sue
