DH cancelled the insurance - Page 4

I can totally sympathize with both of you, actually.
We recently joined a group plan through my husband's employer. My employer is located across the country, and coverage through them is available, but not practical as it's all "out of network" coverage. But the premiums through my DH's employer are HUGE. I'm very tempted to go back to "self-insurance" - or just to drop it and pick up a catastrophic coverage individual policy.

Private insurance is fine as long as you don't have any preexisting conditions. My dh is on blood thinners, hence they didn't work out for us. Pregnancy was the other major one. Some of their restrictions on maternity were ridiculous. There are other ways to get group coverage, I think teacher unions and various other groups offer them. A lot of employers are reducing the percentage of the premiums they subsidize to reduce their costs. Self-insurance is good if you can set aside the money you would have paid in premiums towards only medical expenses.

The 990 bucks per month over 5 years was almost 60K, which was crazy money to pay for the benefits we used. If you're healthy, you wouldn't cost nearly that much in doctors appointments over those 5 years. I decided that insurance is such a racket. No wonder they make gobs of money.
