What goes in a preschoolers backpack

DS is starting pre-K in september. They seem to expect him to have a backpack, but I'm not sure what he is supposed to be bringing in it. He has no list of supplies, he won't stay for lunch, they discourage random toy (though lovies are OK,) his spare clothes incase of an accident stay at school, snacks are provided, so other than his stuffed bunny and a sweater is there something that goes in the backpack?

I think the backpack is more for what comes home - projects, memos, etc. It could also be used to bring in show & tell and special supplies needed for that day.

Right. Around here they tell us the bag has to be big enough to fit all their winter and/or gear. Looked so uncomfortable.... My kiddo has always only taken a playsilk + a mini notepad (she really likes to "take orders") in the front pocket. We kept an extra pair of slippers & a poncho in her classroom cubby. The kids were allowed to wear slippers in the classroom if their parents permitted, but had to arrive at school in sneakers (of course had to wear their sneakers for sports & recess, too)

A hat and mittens for cold days. : A card with parent and emergency phone numbers and maybe a sippy cup or thermos?
When I taught preschool most of the kids had a folder for putting papers in, the daily note about their day, artwork, etc.

My daughter is 4and in preK this year. I keep an extra pair of panties in her backpack, in case of accidents (which she hasn't had to use, thank god!) and she carries her work home in it.

DS's contains his sweater or jacket, summer or winter hat, water bottle, and lunchbox. I also slip an extra pair of shorts and undies in the front pocket, just in case he needs it, although he'll also have an extra outfit at school. Also sunscreen this time of year. He also uses it to bring work home or bring show-and-tell to school.

My girls are both going to preschool and their backpack is for a full change of clothes including socks and underwear and whatever paper stuff they bring home.

Two of my daughters go to a Montessori preschool and they don't require backpacks. They each have a cubby and the only thing in there is a change of clothes (shirt, shorts/pants depending on season, undies, and socks). For artwork, they have a special folder and counter (if it requires drying) and when I go in to pick them up, they just hand it to me (shoving it in a backpack would just crinkle it). There is also another folder that I check weekly that contains any pertinent school info. i.e. newsletters, tuition payment receipts, etc. Breakfast and lunch is included in the tuition, so no need to take food either.
