Space related movies for DS?

DS is almost 6 years old and really into space related stuff these days - he's read a bunch of books from the library and now he's been asking us if there are any movies for kids that have aliens or space ships in them. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Are you looking for scientifically accurate films or no?
The first kids movie that comes to mind is Zathura. Not sure if you've heard of it/seen it but it's sort of like Jumanji except with space. It's not particularly accurate in terms of scientific fact but it's a cute movie and I believe it's rated PG.

Note: Just to forewarn you (don't know if this will matter to you or not and I honestly have no idea why it's in the movie) but there is a point in the movie where one of the kids says to his robot "Go get me a juice box, bi-atch!" and while I found it oddly hilarious given the context, some parents might not find that appropriate for a 6 yo.

I have no idea what your threshold would be for ratings and such, but Apollo 13 springs to mind. Magic Schoolbus did some episodes about space, if you can get hold of them somehow.

He would probably love WALL-E...I took my teenage girls and we all loved it but it would be just a good for a little guy!

I thought of Apollo 13 as well. That's one of my favorite movies, and I love to rant about how useless NASA is. ;-) My son loves it, too, though he first saw it when he was about 9.

The only others I can think of (The Right Stuff, From the Earth to the Moon) would be a little too slow-moving or just may not be appropriate for kids your son's age.

Isn't there a Brave Little Toaster Goes to Space movie? I lurve BLT

Muppets in Space
Buzz Lightyear series is set in space
Spaceballs (if you're into that sort of humor)
Scooby Doo and the Space Aliens

That's all I can think of at the moment.

I wouldn't bother with Clone Wars if you are so inclined... I about stuck a fork in my eye when I saw it over the weekend with my kids. It's just one battle after another after another... and on and on and on... UGH!!!

Popular Mechanics for Kids makes a video/dvd called "Radical Rockets".
It's informational but fun, hosted by preteen hosts. One of whom is Elisha Cuthbert from the show 24, I just found out. She is sort of a sex bomb now but she was young and innocent when this was made, lol. http://www.popularmechanics.com/marketing/pm4kids
It appeals to older kids and is appropriate for younger kids.

My ds is also 6 and he calls me "Mooming" or "Moom" instead of Mom alot. I laughed when I saw your username!

we love muppets in space SOO much! It's one of those ones that the kids can watch it day in and day out and mom and dad don't lose their minds hearing it over and over...it's clever and intelligent and so on.

there is a veggietale that goes in space...it has the good samaratan part at the beginning, but then the second part is the "USS Applepies" (star trek spoof) I think it's called "God wants me to love them" or something like that.

Honestly, we felt fine about our DS seeing the original Star Wars movie at that age. We sat with him the first time to make sure he wasnt freaked about darth vader etc, but he was fine. He also saw Phantom Menace around that age...we waited a bit on some of the otehrs in teh series (he's 8, and will not see Revenge of the Sith for a loooong time yet) but he's seen all the others now.

Of course there are all the star trek ones...don't know how you feel about them rating wise...we haven't let our DS see them yet, although DH loves them and I know the time is nearing.

Again, rating in question...but men in black is full of aliens.

War of the Worlds is an old classic--might be too slow for him, but it's not as scary as some of the newer alien ones...

I don't know if he'd be interested in more of the "real thing" but we really enjoyed For All Mankind. It's taken completely from NASA recordings of the various lunar missions and has voice overs done by the astronauts. It doesn't follow linearly at all, it cobbles together various missions (and has been criticized for this), but it was interesting to see actual footage of the moon landings and hear the astronauts reminice. My seven year old DS was mesmerized by it.
