Your take on Chocolate?

Sally F says no, Nina Planck says yes. What's your take on chocolate?

I love the stuff and think it's good in moderation provided it's quality chocolate and not filled with soy sludge and other crap.

I say yes, a little too often For real, though, if I wasn't allergic to chocolate, I would consider it a food group. I think good, high quality chocolate is not a health food, persay, but not totally bad, either.

once in a great while if it's organic and not loaded with soy and other crap. I think the issue is sugar more than anything else. For A lot of people eating one piece of choc per day is enough to make them crave more sugar. If it doesn't make you crave more and doesn't make your children crave more than I see nothing wrong with a small piece of really dark stuff.

laughup soy sludge....can I use that!

And yep in moderation and if it is the good stuff I would say OK.

In my world, chocolate is mental health food. (The good kind, with none of the added garbage.)

It's yummy!!!

I agree with others, as long as it's in moderation, not filled with crap, and organic I don't see a problem with it.

I don't eat it.
Several years ago, when I was overcoming my addictions, such as salty, sweet, I realized that chocolate was my only true addiction. I was so unhappy that a food had such a hold on me. I don't smoke or drink, so I didn't think I had an addiction. But we all face one kind or another. I quite chocolate, and went through "withdrawals". I tend to lean towards Sally Fallon on the chocolate thing. It is traditionally eaten in Mexico/south America, but I heard that they have the most cavities. (but they eat lots of agave too, so who knows.) It is not hurting me to not eat it. I don't even substitute with carob because it give me stomach aches.

Also since there is questions on eating it, I just stay safe by not especially since I have a baby, and I want the best for her.

Whoa, I missed that. Was that in NT???

I don't eat much chocolate but when I do it's the super dooper dark stuff, like over 80% with no dairy, soy etc, and organic. Chocolate is a great source of magnesium and selenium. We often crave chocolate around our moon time because our bodies our lower in magnesium at that time.

People have been eating/drinking chocolate for thousands of years. That sounds pretty "traditional" to me, especially since it is fermented before eaten. We may not eat it in exactly the same way as the Mayans but a high quality dark chocolate is about as close as we can get without growing our own. I wouldn't stress about it.
Enjoy!

: I'd slap that on my bumper!

I use organic, fair-trade cocoa in my muffins & cookies all the time, I don't see the problem.

Even Aajonus Vonderplantiz says chocolate is okay, but he is talking about raw chocolate that you make yourself, you know what I mean, not homemade cacao beans!

It's yummy! Really, high-quality soy-free organic dark chocolate is totally FINE in my book.

Since I'm sitting here eating my raw cacao concoction that I came up with a few years ago (during my raw vegan stint), I thought I'd chime in.

There's a raw foodist book out there called Naked Chocolate (by my fav. raw foodist Shazzie, and her friend David Wolfe) that explains origins of cacao and all the good things in it (mostly antioxidants and such) that make it supposedly healthy. My take on it is, it might be healthy, it might not be, but occasionally to eat said concoction when I'm craving very junky foods, and instead of feeling naughty or guilty or sick, I come away feeling gleefully sneaky - I got a treat and a semi-nourishing snack all in one - that's a great deal to me! And the sweet tooth is gone until it revists again in a week (sometimes less ).

Here's what I make:

Raw almond butter (I'm sure you could make it NT by making crispy nut butter - I'm personally too lazy, it's an occasional treat afterall)
Coconut butter
Celtic sea salt (or similar)
Raw honey
High quality vanilla extract
Raw cacao powder
One or two drops of food-grade peppermint essential oil (if you like minty chocolate - it gives a layered taste, which I love)

It's mostly half almond butter, and a little less than half honey, with the remainder being a little of everything else (to taste) - I especially love it when the coconut oil is solid, because I get chunks of coconut flavor. I mix it all up in a bowl, put it in the freezer for a minute or two (if I'm patient), retrieve, sit and eat as much as my taste buds enjoy (honey sweetened foods get really overpowering after a short time, I've noticed, which is a really great thing).

Super yummy. Not TF, but not exactly junk either, imho.

Your take is similar to mine, although I'm not so picky about soy lecithin, considering the quantity of chocolate I personally consume (I literally have 3-5 chocolate chips at a time.) I do use a lot of cocoa powder in baking and in homemade hot cocoa (7oz hot water, 1 TLBS cocoa, 1 oz coconut milk, and stevia to taste, optional drop of vanilla and/or dash of cinnamon.)

I'm reading this as I sit here eating my organic tapioca made with coconut milk. What did I sprinkle on top . . . coco powder. Yum.

Nothing wrong with a good high-quality chocolate. Especially for those of us with Native ancestors. The current household favourite involves liberal amounts of chiles (local restaurant makes it in-house, we think), and that's perfectly traditional and correct.
