can I use a fitted or pocket pattern for a cover?

I've only found one site that has a free pattern for diaper covers, and the pattern sizes don't seem very accurate--the newborn size was going to be way too big for a newborn, but the preemie size is a bit small for a newborn. There are quite a few free patterns that I've found for fitted diapers or pockets, though--could I just use one of those for cutting out my fabric pieces, and then proceed with making a cover from there?

yep, you totally can do that. in fact i made covers from the ottobre fitted diapers, wee weka pockets & RRP.

Did you try them over fitteds, and did they fit properly?

yes and i also use prefolds. i however use velcro and not snaps. i would suggest you make one and see how it goes. i use pins for my RRP and that fits better obviously.
