Our Wal-Mart "nee nee" story...

So...I took my 3 year old to Wal-Mart and put her in the cart. Long ago, she couldn't say nursing and referred to it as Nee Nee. (nee nee milk, your nee nees, etc.).

So she's not nursing anymore, but for comfort she likes to put her hands down my shirt "hold nee nee".

So she's in the shopping cart and she says, "I want to hold your nee nee."

Me: "No, not right now, honey, but you can hold it later."

Meg: (Loud voice) "I want to hold your nee nee right now!"

Me: (through clenched teeth) "Not now! Later."

Meg: (SCREAMING): "I! WANT! TO! HOLD! YOUR! NEE NEE!"

Me (after thinking a sec, get down face level w/her and whisper): Wal-Mart said, no holding nee-nees.

Meg: I don't like Wal-Mart.

LOL!!!! She claims she's never going to Wal-Mart with me again and I'm like, WooHoo!!! I get to shop alone!

You are so lucky she says Nee-Nee. Because Esther says boobie, and that has indeed led to some "I wan hold your boobie!" yells in the middle of Wal-Mart. (And even more "I wan boobie! You need give me boobie!" See, she also calls nursing itself "boobie.")

Both my girls have called nursing, "nee nee". And that's a really cute story.

I just wanted to say how much I can empathize. Ever since I weaned ds at 27 months he has substituted a hand down my shirt when he's sad, tired or wants some comfort. I didn't mind much at first but now he's almost 4 years old I am really trying to wind it down. Despite my lactivist leanings and total support for NIP, I am totally embarrassed when he wants to touch my "nursies" in public, and don't actually like it much anyway myself - for some reason it feels physically intrusive and unpleasant to me now. Also, it drives DH up a tree because now that ds is really a little boy rather than a toddler he can't get over the idea that it is inappropriate. I feel terrible even as I gently discourage ds, because of course he doesn't understand what's wrong, and its impossible to explain without making him feel bad about it or bringing up a bunch of confusing social concepts, which of course I don't want to do. Its a dilemma.
