How much $ does an indoor clothes line really save?

Just wondering. There is no way we can hang all our laundry but I thought if we could do some in the winter that, that would be great.

There are a lot of things that factor into it--gas/electric, your utility rates, how many loads/week, the efficiency of your appliances, etc.

I go on binges when I'll line dry for a few months. I don't see any big savings in our utility bill--maybe a few dollars. I do it for the environmental benefits when I can, but I work full time out of the home and honestly it's a big PITA.

Costs about 75 cents per load to dry at the laundromat so depends on how many loads you do per week.

Here is a site that helps you figure out your savings line drying versus machine http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/howmuch.html

Thanks for the link, according to that I would save about $8 a month.

I would still like to get a wire dryer for other reasons but it looks like money isn't going to be one of them. (In my situation the time it would take would probably end up losing us money)

Another savings is the wear and tear on your clothes. Line dried clothes last longer.

I air dry a lot of my daughter's clothes because drying causes quite a bit of wear. But I don't think we save any money doing it.

When we switched to drying racks, our propane bill (for the dryer) when from $35 to about $12 a month. Of course, we were still cloth diapering then so we had more laundry in general. And my husband uses the dryer to finish up the drying (because air drying makes it too crunchy for him). So we still use it a bit.
