Reliable car advice for commuting?

Thread Starter
My husband needs to replace his commuter mini van that we got from in-laws since it is having more problems (it already has high mileage) and for gas consumption.
We would like something with 4 doors, safe, good mileage, reliable car with room for 3 kids in the back (2 in carseats).
Also we are hoping to get something under 5K. We haven't shopped for sedan or small economy cars so I don't know what to look for.
I'm thinking hatchback or wagon for a little more room (or would it be?)
Thank you.

Look for a good Volvo! It will last you forever and fit a family of 5 for sure!
