How to finish off legs?

I finished the Free Tiny Birds Soaker Pattern (you know, the one with the ruffle legs), but it's for a boy. How can I finish off the legs without making them too much smaller? Knitting preferred, but I suppose I can give crocheting a whirl if it's the only way.

I just knit an inch or so in seed stitch or garter stitch and bind off loosely. You can also do an applied I cord instead. Easy peasy.
