Peeved

We are moving across country. I just learned that my husband's job will not pay him for the sick time he has accrued. It's around $800. They'll pay for the regular leave time he has accrued, but not sick.

It's irritating. He works for the state. They currently have no union. The one we are moving to does. I hope things will be better.

Many employers seperate out sick vs vacation time, instead of lumping it all into PTO (paid time off) . We also learned the 'hard way' once to always use sick time first as that is never paid upon leaving a company.
Is it possible DH can take "sick" time?? I know it stinks but now DH always reads the HR hand book and also makes sure his employees know the ins and outs of payroll and benefits.

He does not want to call in when he is not sick. I tried to get him to tonight. So I could take a nap and have help with the kids (yesterday sucked) :

Maybe he needs some mental health days, hehe. That's what my MIL does - she's never sick so she takes mental health days. Also, you can take sick days when someone in your family is sick. Maybe he'd consider your exhaustion from packing a good reason?

I've never heard of any company that pays you out for sick time when you leave. I think it's pretty normal not to.

I've never heard of a company that pays out the sick pay at end of employment. it's pretty standard to pay out vacation pay though. At my last job I just happened to get sick there towards the end and used up all of my sic pay (38 hours)

I have never NOT been paid for any sick time I had remaining. I would be pretty PO'd if I wasn't.

OP, I have to ask: where did you get the idea came from that your DH should get paid for sick days not taken? That isn't usual.

I had one job where all days off were lumped into one pool - you could use them for vacation, sick days, etc. But every other job I've ever had separated sick days from vacation days. In my current job, I get 10 sick days a year. I'll usually take 3-4.

because he earns the sick time monthly as he does his regular vacation time, instead of just being allotted a certain amount of days per year, and other family members working in similar fields (although in different states) have been paid for the time not used.

I agree that it would be unusual to be paid for sick time when you leave.

It is typical to be paid for vacation time.

I think of vacation as something you earn that is yours to use as you please, but sick time is like an "insurance" account provided by employers that is only used for need. My dh can donate sick time to other employees, and has done so.

I'm a manager and we set up personal time accounts that are used for sick time, vacation, or can be cashed out at any time with budget approval. Usually each employee allows it to accrue for a while and decide whether to use a chunk as time off or cash it out.

then I guess I feel an illness coming on *cough cough*

Eh, I don't know why you would be PO'd over sick pay. It's not something earned that you can take for whatever reason like vacation pay. it's a nice thing some companies do to allow employees to still receive their wages if they are ill. I see no reason why they would pay it out at the end, if I had a business I certainly wouldn't. As I have said before, I don't think it's common at all for companies to do this. I have worked at a few different places and so has DH and none of them did.

except it is something he earns every month. When he left his last state job he was paid for all extra time off, both sick and vacation (different state though) We'll be glad to get back to a union.

Are there dr. appts that need to be caught up on? He could take sick time for his own or his dependent's dr. appts. Chiropractor, dentist, etc. all count, and could at least bring down some of that time. It would also save you the trouble of having to do those routine appointments just as you're settling into your new location.

I've worked state jobs in 3 different states now and never had my sick leave paid out when I left.

My current state, however, if you hold on to retirement, they will use your accrued sick leave to pay your insurance premiums for as long as it lasts before you have to start kicking in your share of the insurance.

I'm also a state employee and accrue vacation and sick time each month. Our state pays out any accrued vacation time. You forfeit all accrued sick leave unless you've been with the state for more than 7 years. If you have been here for 7 years, then they pay 1/4 of your sick leave out when you leave.

It is a little irritating so I used a few "mental health days" when we knew DH would be job searching so that I didn't lose all my accrued sick leave.

My dh works for the State and they pay out vacation time but not sick time.

I thought that this was pretty common. I have never heard of a company paying out for sick time.

My DH gets his sick leave paid, too. I would be ticked. I would think anyone would be mad about not getting something they earned. I am a little bewildered at the people who AREN't peeved.

I wasn't paid for sick time when I left my job. My other job before that lumped it all together, so I was paid for what I had. At my husband's current job, you just tell your boss when you're sick, and there's no count of sick days, I think if it's longer than 2 weeks, it becomes a leave of absence.

Eh, the way I had it explained to me was this: Sick leave is something the employer gives out so that you don't have to use vacation time for illnesses and drs appts.

For us, sick leave is treated differently in a number of ways - it has different maximum accruals allowed, you can "donate" it to a sick coworker who has used up their entire accrual, etc. It's just different. The employer is up front about the differences, we knew it when we signed up. It's only "earned" in the sense that it is a limited benefit so that it can't be abused.
