Mercy Info

Thread Starter
I went for a tour of Mercy last week since I'm delivering with Evelyn there in about 5 weeks or so and thought I'd post some information that they gave me in case it will help anyone else.

You are allowed 4 visitors on the L&D and recovery floors (separate floors). Not sure how strict they are about this, but there is a very big waiting area on the lobby floor.

Since they only have 2 rooms with tubs, I asked the guide how likely it is that I would be able to snag one and she said that they usually try to reserve the tub rooms for patients of the midwives, and it's a good idea to call when I'm in early labor to let them know. She thought it was likely that I would be able to get one.

She also told me that they have squat bars in every room and it doesn't take very long to set up at all if I decide I want one. They have 2 birthing balls and she said they are rarely used, but I could always bring my own if I wanted.

Let's see, she also said rooming-in is standard unless you ask for the baby to go to the nursery. When we went by the nursery, there were 2 babies there.

We are allowed to take video/photos during the labor and delivery, but no video in the operating room if you have a c-section. She also said that it's no problem for us to give baby his first bath in the room.

Ice chips/clear liquids are standard, but our caregiver could override those instructions (snacks and other liquids). Fridge and microwave access on the floor.

I also received a flyer for a new parents group. It's held on Mondays from 10:30-11:30AM, Sheehan conference room, POB 3rd floor. Call Gloria Royster at 410-332-9604 to register for 6-week sessions. It's open to babies 1 week to 6 months of age and their parents and is free of charge.

The only thing I am kicking myself for not asking about is lactation consultants, but I will ask Evelyn about it this week.

It was weird, no one else in the group asked any questions!

thanks for this post!
Evelyn is attending my hb due any day now, but i was talking to my sil who doesn't want a hospital birth but is nervous about a hb. i was telling her that evelyn attends at mercy (which is down the street from her) and how that might be an option. that way if she decides 1/2 way thru pregnancy that she wants a hb it isn't a matter of switching providers.
now i have some more info to give her.
thanks,
rachel

Rachel! I was thinking about you today....Wondering if you were still pregnant or not You SIL might also want to look into the birth centers. I know it's not really a fun drive from Baltimore, but she'd be closer than I am! As long as she;s not due between memorial day and labor day it shouldn't be too bad...lol. I would worry about shore traffic if I were due mid-summer!

OK that freaks me out (traffic). You don't have to cross the bay bridge to go to SB from Bmore, do you?

No, luckily you don't. But, I made my first appointment for my viability scan (I had previous losses) and my tour of Bay Area for May 23rd at noon. Totally not thinking that it was Memorial Day weekend when I made the appointment weeks earlier. Then there was a horrible accident on 97 and it was closed. We were SITTING on Route 2 in Glen Burnie. I had to call and reschedule. It was horrible. I made all future appointments for Tuesday mornings, and I am VERY thankful we're not having a summer baby. I know from trying to get to Annapolis for work years ago, that on Fridays 301/50 and 97 can all be backed up for rush hour and shore traffic in the summer! Yuck!

Mercy was my 2nd choice, and my DH knows that if for some reason this baby comes FAST or I need a hospital, I want to go to Mercy. He hates that thought, since he works for Hopkins.

I birthed at Mercy in March, and there was an LC on staff. She made a point to visit me numerous times, which I appreciate, however I found her to be unhelpful. She made my baby cry every time she tried to help, and said it was probably because his head hurt from the birth. My ped scoffed at that. I went to the Lactation Station at GBMC for a consult a day after leaving Mercy and got very different info that really helped me.

That said, the nurses I encountered at Mercy were very bf-friendly and tried to help me however they could.

Just about everything in your post was spot-on, according to my experience. When I went into labor, the floor was very busy, but my mw made sure they saved room 9 for me. The nurses - both delivery and in the mother-baby unit - also followed my birth plan to the letter, without question. A bath was never mentioned, and they waited over an hour before weighing ds, and promptly brought him right back to me. Everyone was very respectful of my wishes (except the pediatric np, but my ped and I trumped her!).

We must have had the same LC. I was half asleep when she came in to see me. DS was asleep in my arms. She asked how things were going. I told her everything was fine and that I didn't need any help. She asked if she could see how DS nursed just to check everything out. I agreed, but DS was so sleepy and had just eaten, so he didn't want to latch on. She kept trying to force him until he was crying. I told her to stop. It was really annoying.

My experience at Mercy was similar to those described above. Now that DS is almost 2 I can look back and see that everyone respected my wishes and never gave me a hard time about anything, including cosleeping. But at the time I didn't see my experience in such a positive light, because I was so devastated over my failed VBAC.

I think as long as you are confidant in what you want and speak up for yourself, Mercy is a decent hospital.
