Re-lactation, Induced Lactation and Adoptive Nursing Tribe - Page 9

I just checked dosing info on www.asklenore.com for domperidone. Here's what they say:

The maximum dose for domperidone is 20 mg 4 times per day. The suggested beginning dose is 10 mg 4 times per day for 1 week, then increasing to 20 mg 4 times per day. This should be increased gradually as per the instructions in the individual protocols. It is advisable to continue to take the domperidone from the initiation of lactation until weaning. Most mothers find that when they forget a dose their milk supply decreases. However, once lactation is well established and the baby is breastfeeding well, the mother may consider slowly decreasing the domperidone. If her milk supply drastically decreases, she can always increase the dose back to 20 mg 4 times per day.

You can go higher than the 80 mg stated here if you need to. I find 3 times a day is easier than 4 and doesn't effect my milksupply. I have one of those pill boxes with the days of the week on them so that I know how many pills I've taken each day. Without it, I was forgetting if I'd taken my afternoon dose. With it, I have no problems.

Mybabysmama, thank you sooo much for all that info : . I was able to go to the forums at asklenore.com but had some trouble too. My username there is BRmama if you're ever there.

Anyway I'm soooo excited. Okay you mentioned that the Canadian Domperidone works better for you, and I remember reading in one of the past posts here that the Canadian Domperidone works better. So I decided to email dr. Newman and ask him. He replied back with a bunch of information and in it he said that the domperidone there works better than the metoclopramide (Reglan) which is prescribed in the U.S. often. Anyway he even emailed me a prescription.

So I'm going to order more domperidone. The one I bought was through inhouse pharmacy. I was reading the address of the company on the box (of the domperidone) and they're in Australia so I'm guessing they should be okay, plus the top part says motilium in bold letters and underneath it says domperidone. Is the motilium the generic kind? I guess the question I have is when I looked up some canadian pharmacies online they all asked for a prescription to get domperidone so I'm going to try to use this one. I called my ob about it and the nurse as usual was very rude (We already did a complaint on her) and didn't help at all. Then my family dr. who is an awesome dr. isn't covered by my insurance anymore so we're changing insurances to make sure we're covered with him. I guess I can call him I just need to get past his receptionist....anyway I've got my pump that we're renting and I ended up investing on a lactaid. The lactaid isn't here yet but I'm so excited about the pump and finally starting my journey towards breastfeeding :

The dom you got was probably from the Pacific Islands. There's no guarantee it's from New Zealand. It could be, but it may not be. Since you have a prescription, you're fine for the Canadian stuff. I found that if I bought in bulk (1500 tablets) that it's not that much more than the internet stuff. There are plenty of people at www.asklenore.com that do fine with the stuff you bought. I did notice that they no longer list those places in the 'where can you get dom' section. They only list canadian pharmacies. One of the canadian pharmacies only charges for shipping once (it's a higher rate) for the entire year.

I saw a report that sometimes internet medications don't contain the full dosage or even any of the actual medicine. I can't say if that applies to the stuff you got or not. I just decided that this was too important so I wasn't going to risk it even though plenty of online people said it worked just fine for them.

I had my midwives write me a prescription for a total of 160 mg a day. Even though I am now using less, that is what my prescription is for. It allows me to buy the most in one delivery so I have the least amount of shipping fees. I buy 3 bottles of 500 which is a 3 month supply (most that's allowed legally to be sent into the US.)

How exciting all your pieces are finally falling into place. Post if you have any lactaid questions.

I finally got a chance to post at www.asklenore.com and looked to see if you had started any threads, but I couldn't find you. Did you start any? If so, under what category? I am "second" as in "hoping for a second child" which we got. I posted under medical interventions about my baby not gaining weight.

No I haven't had a chance to post, I did however read all that information about domp. It was long but very interesting. I wasn't sure where to post but now I know, It's a lot like mdc in the layout. I saw your post. I hope your daughter continues to ask for the extra milk and gains weight. Have you tried talking to an LC about it?

Sorry for the dumb question : but I was just wondering...Aside from the benefits of bm for the baby, have you noticed any benefits for you? I mean did you lose/gain weight because of the domp, and did your periods stop because of the bm? I'm just wondering...I don't care much about these things as long as I can bf my lo.

When my bioson started weaning himself I didn't cut back on my eating and i gained about 12 pounds. I couldn't try to lose it because we were planning on adopting and I didn't want to decrease my milk supply by dieting.
i didn't gain weight when i started dom, i did gain weight with the stresses of a baby and a "spirited" 3 year old. I haven't had a period since starting the dom.

mybabysmama, that is interesting that you haven't had a period since starting dom -- it isn't the dom doing that, it's all the milk you're making, so congratulations!!!!

I recently switched to yasmin, as the other bcp I was on didn't make my boobs sore or heavy, and while I've only been taking the yasmin for about two weeks, my breasts do feel a little sore and heavy. when I switched pills I had a period, so I'm thinking of the beginning of the yasmin as the beginning of the protocol, and will stick with the bcp's for the full 63 days worth of pills I have, unless everything with the adoption starts to move really quickly (ha! ). I am constantly nauseous, though not too bad, but I feel like I have morning sickness. blah. I have a big bag of frozen green-lipped mussels I keep meaning to make for dinner, but they just do NOT appeal, and I don't think I can cook them with this nausea... hopefully it will go away soon!

we're in new zealand, and I could only get an 80mg/day prescription out of my doc. I may order online, as it seems like it's about the same price as buying it from the pharmacy here. do you think it's necessary to take the full amount of dom before you start pumping? I can't really wrap my mind around why I need to be taking the dom this early... I would think that a few weeks before you start pumping would be best, but I'm open to being convinced otherwise...
I don't know much about the protocol since I haven't done it. However, I think the dom acts as prolactin. I don't know, but would think, that you need estrogen, progesterone, AND prolactin to get actual milk making tissue. If you just stick with the bc/yasmin, you're not getting the full hormonal punch. Just my guess.

Thanks for saying that about my milk supply. One of the things that's great is that when my bioson was the age my daughter is now, my milk supply had dropped enough so I started my period. My daughter has also decreased how much milk she takes. BUT the decrease was in donor milk, not my milk. Therefore, my body doesn't see the decrease in milk so I continue period free. I really like that part.

when I was nursing just my first child, I started my period at 3 months post-partum, but when I had my second and was tandem nursing, I didn't start my period until 14 months post-partum. I don't suspect I'll lose any periods with (maybe?) nursing a two year old who is new to nursing and probably won't nurse much, if at all...

oh, and that makes sense with the bcp's and dom...

Wow I can't wait till I get a good milk supply that'll make me not have my periods lol. Anyway I thought I'd come in and update my status. So far just pumping away and I started taking the domp and herbs. Somebody said I should've gotten the motherlove more milk plus but I'm happy with the motherlove more milk special blend, it's the same brand anyway. Well so far no milk and pumping hurts a little because of that but not too bad. I got the lactaid and I had some issues with it but once I got the hang of it I was able to latch my son and he did beautifully. I keep imagining though that one of these days while I'm pumping I'm going to see drops of milk.
the difference between the more milk plus and the special blend is SB has goat's rue. Otherwise, they have the same herbs. When I needed to reorder SB, they were out of it so they had me buy the more milk plus and goat's rue. For me, I think the goat's rue is the big guns ingredient.

That's great about him latching on with the lactaid. That is the most important thing you can do to stimulate milk production...have him nurse with the lactaid around the clock.

We're starting lactation bootcamp today. I was shocked to get drops of milk as soon as I started pumping.... I hope it's a good sign.

Hdeering that's great news!!!

For a while last week I thought that I had a few drops of bm coming but instead it was my af that showed up!!! I had forgotten about the fact that my breasts always get a little sore before my af, and now they seem to hurt a little more when I pump because of it :. But I'm almost done it only lasts a week for me. He's still doing fabulous on my breast with the sns tho .

That's great.

hdeering, that's great news!

desperatemommytobe, make sure your pump isn't turned up too high before you're making milk -- it does hurt, and can cause injury, and can derail your whole pumping/nursing routine. that's great that he's doing well with the SNS!

domperidone question... does anyone else have crazy dreams??? I can't stand it, they're sometimes just weird and funny, but are just as often scary and disturbing. I thought about taking all my doses earlier in the day/afternoon, but I don't know if that would help anyway... any thoughts?

You don't want to take all your doses too close together as you'll drop your blood levels when your doses are too far apart. I don't have the type of dreams you're discussing.

bumping

So far no milk but it doesn't hurt anymore to pump (my period is over anyway) and with him on the sns it stimulates them. They're starting to hurt in the shower a little I guess that's a good sign.

Tiffani thanks for the tip

Here's a question for you guys. Now that summer is here we're going on vacation next week. How did you guys handle pumping while traveling?
I took a pump with me and pumped as best I could around our schedule. We were staying in a place with a kitchenette and I was able to freeze the milk. Since you've got a baby, you'd give him any milk you pumped so freezing's not an issue.

Pumping is a pain no matter where you are.
