"Wadding" for bag?

I'm knitting a bag and the pattern says to use "wadding" between the lining and the knit outside. Anyone know what wadding is?

That polyester fill stuff used for stuffed animals/pillows, etc?

How about that lining/batting stuff used in quilts?

Oh duh - didn't even think of quilt batting!

Is it really necessary? I knitted this bag double-stranded to meet gauge and it's pretty stiff and fairly heavy... I'm thinking it'd be a bit of overkill.
