Birth Choices Ithaca

Birth Fair to Educate Ithaca-Area Women about Birth Options and to Share
Birth Stories

What: Many providers of birth and complementary care services to the
Ithaca area will come together for a free birth fair designed to give women
and their families the opportunity to share birth stories and learn about
the services available for families before, during, and after birth. As
part of a worldwide movement called Birth on Labor Day (or BOLD), the fair
will include a BOLD Red Tent, or space for mothers of all ages to share and
record their birth stories. In addition, there will be workshops on
prenatal yoga, babywearing, and holistic newborn care as well as informal
group discussions on various topics by many of the Ithaca area's leading
birth and postpartum experts, and birth movies. Food and a kids activity
area will also be available. For more information and an up-to-date
schedule, please see http://www.birthnetfl.org

When: Saturday, September 6, 2008, 11am-3pm

Where: Women's Community Building, 100 W. Seneca Street, Ithaca

Who: Ithaca's leading providers of services for before, during, and after
birth, including midwives, obstetricians, lactation consultants, doulas,
childbirth educators, massage therapists, acupuncturists and more.

The event is sponsored by BirthNet of the Finger Lakes, a consumer group
whose mission is to promote awareness and availability of healthy, normal,
mother-friendly childbirth through information, education, outreach and
advocacy. The BOLD Red Tent is being organized by Ithaca Doulas, a group
of more than 15 Ithaca area women trained to provide support to women
before, during, and after the birth process.

I'm going to be there. My best friend lives in Ithaca, so, DD and I are driving up that weekend.

I've never been to one before, so I have no idea what to expect. But my best friend said, "Oh, Kathee - you have to come; you'll love it"

Plus we haven't seen each other in just over two years (why, yes, I travelled six hours with a four week old to see her), so, that'll be exciting. I love Ithaca. I feel like a wierdo there, but the exact opposite as usual, since I'm on the "mainstream" end of the Ithaca spectrum, as opposed to being on the "weird hippie" end where I am now

She's a member of Ithaca doulas, so, I'm sure she'll have the inside scoop on everything. I'm excited!

I'm planning on being there, hopefully to have a chance to share my unassisted birthing story ,as well as multiple VBACS. I'm crossing my fingers nothing interferes w/ plans!

Heh. That's exactly the experience I had coming to Ithaca. People are friendly though. I don't feel too much crunch based judgment here. I wish I could go but I think my parents are going to be here then.

I wish I could go but that's too far right now. While I'm sure giving birth at the event itself would be pretty cool, the car ride up or back would not.
