Health care for the not/selective vaccinating

So, I'm new to issues that come up in regards to health care and declining vaccines. Honestly I'm feeling disgusted right now. After reading about children being dismissed from practices, refused surgery, denied immediate care in ERs so the doctor can berate the parent over vaccination status. I have my own personal issues with the health care model anyway, not related to vaccines, from past experiences.

What does everyone else do? How big of an issue has finding quality health care for yourselves or children been when not vaccinating at all or on schedule?

My children's MCP leaves us very little choice of practitioners. I took dd to the same practice my older kids have been to before, though not in a long time. I felt slightly harassed by one older doctor there and was asked to sign a paper stating that I knew I was endangering my baby and others by not vaccinating. Um, no. The other couple of doctors we saw there were more respectful about the vaccination issue. The same older doctor also told me I should put vaseline on my 5 week old dd's umbilical stump which was not healing quite normally(later found out she had an umbilical granuloma) and to give my 2 month old breastfed baby water in a bottle. Um, no. Then I received a letter stating they would no longer by taking our insurance. I thought I had found another doctor(from recommendations here) but when I went to dd's 4 month appt I was informed he had no longer been working there as of two weeks prior. I went through with the visit with a different doctor. She didn't go beyond asking if we were vaccinating that day. Okay. Yesterday dd had her 6 month appt. Different doctor, same place. I think she did fine at keeping a respectful manner. She repeatedly said, "I'm not judging you as a parent. I can't force you to vaccinate. I can't make you. I know that you have the right as a parent to withhold vaccines, but..." She also shared a 'little girl whose parents withheld the varicella vax almost died of chickenpox so parents rushed out to get her brother the vaccine' story.

So. Is this as good as it gets? Should I just 'be happy' my child has health care and isn't being dismissed from this practice(yet?). I'm considering going through our options again and calling around. I would much prefer a smaller practice of only one family doctor or maybe even two to going to a clinic type, numerous doctors, see whoever is there type of situation anyway. And I would definitely prefer someone AP friendly and open minded to alternative approaches to health and wellness. I think I'm just daydreaming though.

My kids go to a family practice doctor. He is very nice and respects our vaccination decision, as in he knows we're not doing any so he doesn't bother us about it.

My kids are very healthy and I do all my own medical research so when he says something incorrect, I just smile politely and ignore his advice.

Basically we just go to him to keep up a relationship with a doctor, so we can get paperwork signed when we need it.

this is anecdotal evidence, and I do not know why people do not call doctors on this since they love to lord it over the patients when a patient pulls a story out as evidence...

Tell them you have been reading the medical literature that is chock full of arguments, pro/con on vaccinations, the side effects that happen, "one in a million times", reading the VAERS reports, and the Poling case.

Ask your doctor if they have read those.

Ask also why Jonas Salk was never admitted to the National Academy of Sciences nor never won a Nobel Peace Prize.

We did leave one practice because they gave me a hard time. I am not quick when I have someone in my face about something. The next group we went to we left for other reasons. We finally found a physician who is more then happy to selective vax. He and I have combined notes on what to do and when. Overall I have been happy with him though he can be too laid back. But I am the kind of mom to do my own research and to drag my kids to a specialist if needed. To me having a doctor willing and open to my ideas and thoughts is worth more then having the best doctor in the world who does not give me the time of day.

I have had much more luck with a DO instead of a ped/MD. They don't even vaccinate in his office at all so it's a non-issue, although he wouldn't harp on the vax thing anyway. And he's fully supportive of us seeing a chiropractor and the supplements we take from the chiro to keep us healthy.

To me, finding good healthcare is next to impossible so I would probably look around some for someone more open to alternative meds and non-vax but if that particular doc is ok w/ non-vax you might want to just stick around. Plus, IME docs have said they are "open" to alternative healing and then when the time comes you want to try something different they call it a bunch of bunk. It's just such a difficult and irritating thing to deal with.

DS' only ever seen our old family doctor (DO). Hes OK with us not vaxing (though we did get a lil lecture about HiB :eyeroll). I don't think he actual gives vaccines anyways... I"m pretty sure you have to goto the health department around here for them.

Oh, and we're on medicaid managed care... and have had no problems with them or DJFS or WIC or anyone, so far ;D

Beware the AAP Refusal to Vaccinate form!

They all share the same horror stories. Please read this thread and this thread.

I think I am going to poke around a bit in my list of doctors just in case one might fit us better. Its frustrating though because I know receptionists and doctors are not always up front and honest over the phone and I can't have a visit covered by insurance unless I switch PCP's before a visit. So this is potentially a big pita.

spero I didn't sign it and won't and I'll check out those links as I find time, thanks.

As for chiropractors, whats up with that? I keep reading about people going to them, but have never been to one myself. I thought they were just for adjusting spines, so I guess I'm ignorant and need filled in. I do believe my insurance covers a certain number of visits per year and you don't have to get a referral, I'll have to check.

I really don't care for the pedi practice's expectation that we go again at 9 months then 12 then 18. I've been fine with going so often so far, but it is clear that dd is healthy, developing well, and growing well, needing no type of intervention. I don't want to take her for the 9 and 12, but want a doctor available if she has a valid reason to be seen. I do have some worries about being accused of 'neglect' if I don't follow their schedule and recommendations. I don't like that feeling. My dd is very loved and well cared for. I should have no worries at all.

I also wonder about the future for all 3 kids and worry this may be an issue for them if they do need health care for specific reasons. My dd was vaxxed through the 4-6 yr boosters, my ds up until the 4-6 yr boosters(he didn't get them). I don't intend for them or the baby to get any more at all at this time. I guess we can just cross that bridge if we come to it, but I'm not satisfied with this situation at all.

After reading the posts on this board I was all prepared to have issues. I got out ped's name from a list that the HM MWs in the area keep of peds who are recommended by other HBers.

I only went to the first couple of appointments but my ped hasn't even brought up vaxes. He just wanted to know where she was born because he didn't remember seeing her before. I said "at home" and he said that's why they haven't met.

I agree with pp that you have to find an allopathic doc who harmonizes with you; they work for you,not vice versa. If you don't want to do well baby visits (I didn't) then go to a naturopath.

I have had three kids...one just had the chick pox and it was just a blip. One got an ear infection, yes one and that was it, tho scary I didn't give him abx and hmmm. No chronic ear or sinus infections. wow.

they have amazingly strong immune systems. I take them to urgent care about once a yr/less (daughter has a knack for accidents) but that's it. I have made these decisions after lots of research and more importantly, perhaps, mommy instinct.

the whole western medical system is inherently flawed; just ask any doc or pharma rep for that matter...we need to start to think with our common sense intelligence instead of fear.
