toddler and yarn- xposted in toddlers and Waldorf

DS is 17 months and enjoys playing with my yarn, pretending to crochet, etc. so I thought he might like some other yarn "games." His manual dexterity is just barely average for a boy his age, so something like finger knitting would be too much for him. Any ideas? I thought I might make him some lacing cards out of index cards with a hole puncher, and use a yarn needle with them; but that's about as far as I've gotten.

Kids knitting ideas...

I had the same issue with my son. What I did was get him a big pair of knitting needles and a ball of yarn I didn't care about. He would play with it for a long time while I sat and knit, making it into a huge jumble but it was always a jumble of something to him. This satisfied him for awhile.
Then we got a kit from a friend that had pre-cut out shapes and holes around the side, he sewed it together, stuffed it and decorated it. My two year old daughter was able to do this too. I want to felt some more pieces to cut out and have them make gifts. I have a knitted toy book that has felted gingerbread men, so that's my plan for family winter gifts this year. Or we can make kits to give other kids.... hey...
We also tried the French knitting tool, knitting bee... knitting nancy, I know there's other names. He didn't get it. We will re-visit that some day. As well as attempting finger knitting.
My son is five now and he still wants to learn how to knit, so I want to keep that desire alive until he can!
