DD's school still uses corporal punishment!

I was filling out the usual beginning of school year forms, and stuck in the middle was an "exemption from corporal punishment" form.

Here's a little quote:

Quote:
In an attempt to resolve some of the conflict associated with the use of corporal punishment, (school name) will now allow parents to decide whether or not their child will be subjected to corporal punishment.
Oh, I'm so glad they decided to "allow" me to choose whether or not my child is beaten at school. I'll definitely be having a chat with the principal tomorrow. They freaking PADDLE these kids!!!

Grrr... another quote:

Quote:
Parents quite often feel that school personnel administer punishment that is too severe, while at times school personnel feel that parents are not supportive of efforts to have well-behaved students.

OMG! As a teacher I would rather get fired than agree to paddle a child. Can you homeschool? I know you won't give permission, but how horrible that this is even going on!

I assume this is not a public school?

OMG, do your kids go to a British boarding school circa 1933? That's crazy.

WHAT?!? Seriously? That's baffling! I am baffled!

Oh, I am so sorry. Just seeing a paddling affects children, too. I hope all the parents disallow it.

I was just reading over at msnbc an article about how this is still legal and used in like 20 states and is an everyday tactic- not a rare exception.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know it was still legal a couple of years ago in Mississippi and Alabama when a friend of mine taught in the delta. she got in trouble for not "whuppin" her students.

It's still legal here in NC. There was a boy I think last year, in a nearby county, whose public school teacher sent him to the E.R. for saying "shutup". He was 5.

That is really disturbing. Is there any way you can send your child to a different school in the area? Assuming there is a choice, of course... :

WTH????

I simply cannot believe that! I went to the same Catholic school that my parents did, and they said how happy they were that no one got smacked with rulers anymore.
I really thought school beatings were a relic of the past. Shudder.

That's just so unbeliveably backwards, wrong.... there are no words.

Last I checked, it was still legal in PA. When I was in school, my mother sent a note saying that it was fine if they wanted to paddle me, but they had to notify her in writing with a full explanation and that she, her legal counsel, and another impartial witness would all have to be present. My teacher got the message that she wasn't allowed to paddle me and used to give me dirty looks all the time. I was sure that she was going to do it, too.. she hated me. : (I never read the note, or even knew about it until I was much older... it explained a fair bit of my teacher's behavior. ) There were two or three boys in class who were paddled on a regular basis, and I can remember several girls getting spanked, too. : It's pretty wretched.

I'm shocked that this practice still remains legal in that many states. My mother can still remember when corporal punishment was legal in our state, but luckily that has long been abolished.
