DD's school still uses corporal punishment! - Page 3

So, I found out that the elementary school (my daughter is in first grade) uses the "green, yellow, red" card system (if your child gets a red card, recess is taken away), if the child does something that would deserve a paddling (they are only done to replace suspension) then you would be notified first. According to her teacher, the majority of the paddlings are done to highschool students (it's totally up to the parent.. apparently many parents would rather have their kid paddled than suspended for 3 days).

(I am 25). I grew up in New Mexico and kids were regulary paddled all the time. The paddle teachers used looked like a cutting board with a handle and one hung up in every classroom. Some of the teachers were definately sadistic with it. Some of the male teachers would brag that they hit the hardest. The teachers had to agree to use the paddle as discipline or else they were not able to work in the school district. When I moved to California after I turned 18 and casually mentioned paddling in one of my college classes, everyone was absolutely floored. I was confused that they didn't believe me. They were disgusted and shocked at the idea and some of them refused to believe it. I thought that's how all schools were everywhere and I was confused that other schools actually use other means of discipline! But yeah, it is common in most of the South. They still do it at the school I went to and in most schools it is still a very commonly accepted thing. People would be surprised what still goes on in schools these days. The ACLU would have a field day with the school I went to. Oh, the stories I could tell...

Parents quite often feel that school personnel administer punishment that is too severe, while at times school personnel feel that parents are not supportive of efforts to have well-behaved students.
Unfortunately, this quote is true in many schools - even when there is no corporal punishment involved in the discipline. Teachers in many schools, are fighting an uphill battle wasting class time on discipline issues.

It's not allowed in any of the districts around here.
