Documentation for breastfeeding providing so much more than food

NAC... - so long story short:

Please, could you give me your references for breastfeeding providing so much more than food?
You know: security, attachment, cuddles, safety, medicine - all so important.
I KNOW this is true, with every cell of my being, but I also know that politicians listen more to researchers and professionals than a mum. So - please give me references!

I need it very soon, for an important documentation that is to be given to the government of Norway. I don't have time to explain the whole background story now, but I will as soon as I get some more computer time.

-thank you soo oooo much in advance!

May I suggest a trip over to Google Scholar? It is a great way to search for peer-reviewed scientific literature without having to filter out massive amounts of opinion and predigested media reports. A simple Google Scholar search for "breastfeeding" produced 209,000 results, including these:

- Interventions for the control of diarrhoeal diseases among young children: promotion of breast-feeding. Feachem RG, Koblinsky MA. Bull World Health Organ. 1984;62(2):271-91.
- Breast-feeding and health in the 1980s: a global epidemiologic review. Cunningham AS, Jelliffe DB, Jelliffe EF. J Pediatr. 1991 Nov;119(5):843-4.
-Promotion of Breastfeeding Intervention Trial (PROBIT) A Randomized Trial in the Republic of Belarus. Kramer MS et. al. JAMA. 2001;285:413-420.

ETA: Google generally pulls up abstracts rather than full-text journal articles due to copyright issues. When reading scientific abstracts, you can generally skip to the "Conclusions" section at the end and see if the abstract is relevant to what you're trying to do.

Thank you so much!

Last night I lay awake and thought about this, and I found out that what I also need specifically is:

Documentation for that the child gets benefits from actually feeding at the breast. Of course, breastmilk in a bottle is better than formula in a bottle, but in this case I need to be able to show that there is a difference between getting pumped breastmilk from a bottle, and actually being close to mother and nursing.
Thank you SO MUCH for any input!

Try doing a google search under "Dr Jack Newman" he has a several articles etc on the web.

Here is a link to a list of articles he has compiled on the "risks of artificial feeding" (eg - not breastfeeding)

Okay, how about this:

- Breast feeding, bottle feeding, and non-nutritive sucking; effects on occlusion in deciduous dentition.Viggiano D et. al. Archives of Disease in Childhood 2004;89:1121-1123. Found that breastfeeding- as opposed to bottle-feeding and/or pacifier use- had a positive effect dental alignment.

- Early exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk of postnatal HIV-1 transmission and increases HIV-free survival. Iliff PJ et. al.
AIDS. 19(7):699-708, April 29, 2005. Found that exclusive breastfeeding- as opposed to breastfeeding plus supplementation- substantially reduced mother-to-child HIV transmission. (Relevant mostly in situations of extreme poverty where HIV + mothers cannot afford the safest option: feeding their babies formula made with clean water.)

- Current knowledge about skin-to-skin (kangaroo) care for preterm infants. Anderson GC.J Perinatol. 1991 Sep;11(3):216-26. Found that preterm infants given kangaroo care (constant holding, skin-to-skin contact, and unrestricted access to the breast) were more likely to thrive and were discharged from hospital sooner than those given conventional care.

- Breast-Feeding and the Working Mother: A Profile. Ryan AS and Martinez GA. PEDIATRICS Vol. 83 No. 4 April 1989, pp. 524-531. Found that full-time employment outside the home had a substantial negative effect on breastfeeding duration. (The conclusion I draw from that is that pumping-and-bottle-feeding is not an adequate replacement for breastfeeding at the breast in terms of maintaining mom's milk supply and desire to continue nursing.)

www.brianpalmerdds.com has info about how bf is good for jaws and teeth formation.

The LLL International site has a document called Outcomes of Breastfeeding that has a segment with summaries of some studies that relate to psychological development of bf babies vs. ff. At least it did last I checked, I have not gone thru all the pages of the most recent version.
