What about folks like me who puke the whole time? I couldn't keep any fluids down (or solids either...not for lack of trying tinctures/juices/water/everything!!!) and my mw was worried about dehydration. Is there another route to prevent dehydration in a case like this? (FWIW, I did have problems with swelling, bloated me and baby, increased birth weight, took a while for milk to come in, etc...so I'd like to avoid IV next time even if I'm puking like I'm possessed again...)

not really- sometimes you can use ginger or the sea bands and get some relief or an anti-nausea drug.... but that is why I put a few exceptions on my post because sometimes IVs help

You'd think that they'd be able to do a reasonable amount of fluid at a reasonable rate instead of just shoving as much fluid through the IV as fast as possible. Like more like what you'd drink if you were keeping things down, I don't know 8 oz an hour or something.

Thanks Sapphire_Chan and mwherbs for your thoughts. It's great to get other perspectives about this because I need to decide (soon) whether I'm using the same midwife this time around or not, and I'm curious whether the IV was a good decision or not in my case.

For me, it hurt like a *#$% and seriously interfered in my ability to cope with labor. Ironically, I think I could have dealt with the pitocin-augmented labor if it hadn't been for the darn IV!
