Plugged duct?

I think someone just posted about a plugged duct, but I didn't want to hijack her thread.

Last night I developed a huge painful lump in my right breast. Unfortunately (?) my babe likes to sleep 7 hours, so we didn't get much nursing done. The other weird thing is I have a white spot on my nipple directly in line with the lump. Sort of like a blister, but it really isn't. As I express, I notice little or no milk at all comes out of it.

Is this a plugged duct? Any suggestions?

What you have sounds exactly like what's called either a milk blister, or others call it a bleb. It's exactly as you described. It is a flap of skin, like a blister, with milk under it. Often the milk can't get out, so it causes the plugged duct. Some moms use warm compresses with either water or sometimes warm oil, to loosen the skin before a feed. Sometimes a primary care doc will use a sterile needle to open that area. It makes the plugged duct resolve right away. Increasing vitamin c can help too. I hope you feel better soon. Sue

Yes, this is a milk blister. I used to get them all the time along with plugged ducts. I started taking Lecithin supplements (1200 mg 3x/day) and I haven't had one since! I also used to take baths and soak the breast and massage like crazy with oils. I would just keep massaging and squeezing until the milk would pop the blister and it would all come out! You can also sterilize a needle and burst it yourself! I never got that to work for me though.
