An airplane flew by and sprayed...

This morning a plane sprayed the neighboring fields with something. The plane flew dirrectly over our house when it turned around so it was very close.

How do I find out if we have the right to know when this kind of spraying is going to occur?

Not sure. But if I had to guess; I'd say to contact the US Environmental Protection Agency. Perhaps they can help, or at least direct you to a local office or some other suggestion.

This is for Canada, but maybe you can some find relevant info:

Quote:
Say you are a homeowner whose residence is right next to a commercial field and you are concerned that you could be exposed to pesticide drift. Make yourself known to the landowners (and/or producers that rent land). Register with a citizens’ organization that identifies your property to applicators as a “no spray zone.”
.
.
.
Consider noting those details of the possible trespass that you are able to document:
time of day, wind direction, identifying markings on the spray rig or plane, etc.
If you know the landowner or tenant who called for the application, contact them to determine what was being applied. Contact a MAFRI office to obtain information on toxicity of the product in question. It will be in everyone’s best interest if a third party (such as a MAFRI staff person) is called upon to initiate the dialogue.

When a plane is involved and there is a question of whether the flight path took the applicator directly over sensitive areas, Transport Canada – another federal agency – may be called in to determine whether there was an infraction under its legislation.

I just wrote an email to US Enviro Agency. Hopefully I will get some sort of reply. Right now the field is being sprayed for the second time.

Is it silly of me to be concerned?

My guess is that it is something antifungal for the corn.

Of course, not. Especially since you don't even know what they are spraying!

Are you getting the kids inside and windows closed when you notice they are spraying? This caught my eye because our town is getting sprayed for mosquitoes tonight and I just found out. The info on that recommended closing windows, turning off fans and a/c, staying inside for 30 minutes afterwards, even though the spray is considered safe .

Our air is off and there are a couple of windows open.... will close them now. I may just call the farmer and ask what was sprayed.

We have a ton of bats, love em. They don't seem to be keeping up with the mosquito population. I guess the West Nile virus rate got too high or something so they decided to spray the greater area.
