facial cleansers from scratch?

I've decided to create my own facial cleansers. Does anyone have any recipes to share? I think I heard about honey as a cleanser or moisturizer. Can i put brown sugar in it (or olive oil)to be an exfolient? What do I do with oats? I'm excited for suggestions!

DH and I both wash our faces with honey and love it! I'm prone to acne and find that raw honey keeps it at bay a little better than your standard honey bear honey. DH thinks raw honey stinks so he just uses clover honey from Trader Joe's. Just squeeze a dallop into your hand and apply to your face. I do it when I first get in the shower and let it sit until I'm done washing, shaving, etc., then just rinse. About every 3 days, I sprinkle a little baking soda into the honey dallop in my hand to exfoliate. I keep the baking soda in an old glass spice shaker. It works great. I still break out a little but much less than using soap or other cleansers. The only thing that even compares to honey in treating my acne is cleaners with high levels of benzoil peroxide which dries out my face and bleached my awesome bamboo towels! : There's a huge thread about washing your face with honey somewhere here on MDC.

I used proactiv for years and it didn't really do much but irritate my skin.

I've been using a mixture of raw honey, ground almond meal, apple cider vinegar, distilled water and lavendar essential oil. It's super easy to make, and my face is clear!

If you want the recipe, let me know!

I recently made some stuff that worked well. The exact recipe is at home, but it was honey, ground almond, a little castille soap, and something else...

Those sound great! I don't know if I have ever seen ground almond meal at the store. But then I've never looked. I think right now I will go try some honey.

How is castille soap different from regular soap?

I think some people just grind up raw almonds in a coffee grinder. I think that most soaps are actually detergents and castille soap is truly a natural soap. I remember reading about the difference but it was a looooong time ago. Hopefully someone else will have a better answer for you.

AngelBee, I love your siggy!

I would love to have this recipe, please please! DBF has acne-prone skin, and so do I now that I'm pg.

Here ya go!

I use a glass jar with a tight fitting lid to make it so I can shake the heck out of it to melt the honey and make sure the almon meal doesn't chunk. I store it in a plastic squirt bottle though. You need to find something with a big enough hole to let the wet almond meal through.
I get the ground almond meal at Trader Joes. You could grind your own if you have a really good grinder. I like the already ground stuff because it is all uniform and totally tiny - less clogging of the squirt bottle!

3 oz (6Tbls, or 1/4c + 2Tbls) raw honey
4 oz ground almond meal (1/2c)
2 oz (1/4c) Apple cider Vinegar
2 oz (1/4c) Distilled water
6 drops of lavendar essential oil

I grind up oatmeal and mix it with honey in my hand and apply in the morning. The oatmeal is a light exfolient and the honey cleanses and moisturizes. I do the oil cleansing method at night with shea butter - unrefined.

Depends on what kind of skin you have- for oily, acne prone- Chickpea flour mixed with a bit of water or non-fat plain yogurt
for combo, uneven tone skin -a mixture of rice bran and finely ground oats-mix w/ water or yogurt
for dry skin- honey

For very dry skin (like mine), sugar is a good exfoliant. But I'm not sure how you would prevent it from melting over time.

About once or twice a week, I add brown sugar to the palm of my hand and then add the above mixture to it. Plain sugar dissolves too fast. Brown sugar stays scrubby while you use it.
I have tried keeping it just in a tiny bowl on the windowsil next to the shower, but it gets really hard after a day or so, at least when in the humid summer. So instead, I just scoop out what I need and head to the shower. It's too harsh anyway to do everyday so it's not a big deal.

I tried OCM and didn't like it, so I made this up:

1/4 c. oil (currently using mix of olive and jojoba)
1 t. liquid castile soap such as Dr. Bronner's in whatever flavor you choose
1 t. water
1 t. veg. glycerin or honey

This separates a little, not all the way, so shake before using. I think I actually put a little more soap in this time, and I like it better. For the winter, though, I will probably go with less.

I'm currently using Dr. Bronner's tea tree soap, and I added a few drops of tea tree oil to the mix. Stinks, but my face hasn't been this clear in a long time.

Oil Cleansing Method. I have to go change a diaper right now, but there is a long thread about it somewhere. I tried this method for quite some time and it really worked, but it was kind of messy and a pain, so I found a local lady that makes body care products that I now use (although I still want to try Golden's recipe!).

I made some of this and put it in a honey bear. So far so good. My face feels smooth. I might wind up putting a T of Dr. Bronners in it though.
