Do I need to keep my unvaccinated baby away from newly vaccinated children???

What precautions do I need to take for my unvaccinated infant? Do I need to make sure no other children approach her in public? Should I just keep her away from little kids and other babies incase they were recently given a vaccine?

What can actually happen if she is in close contact with a child who just had a shot? Is there a risk?

Do I also need to avoid ever putting her (when she's older) in the shopping cart seat at the grocery store? Should I avoid playgrounds? Can she catch something if she sat where a vaccinated child was?

I would only really be concerned about the live virus vaxes (MMR, Chickenpox, Rotovirus, and Flumist) since they shed. There is a live virus polio vax but it's not used in the US. The killed virus vaxes don't transmit.

IMO these disease don't concern me so much as a parent in an older child/baby. I wouldn't worry about them playing or sitting where vaxes kids are. I would just try to practive basic cold prevention like washing hands. Children do need exposure to dirt and germs to help build their immune system.

Personally I am avoiding bringing my baby around kids who I know have been recently vaxed with MMR. Just because I am not ready for her to get measles yet. Other than that I just use basic hygiene.

I didn't do anything special...and both my children were shopping cart lickers.

I saw this post a few days ago and didn't take the time to read it. My foster baby had to be vaxed on Monday, and my 10 month old bio is not vaxed. She DID have the rotavirus vax, and sure enough, my oldest has mild symptoms followed by my baby yesterday. His were more serious including a high fever and nasty sinus issues. I wish I'd taken the time to read this post beforehand. It definitely happened to us.

Anyone have any links they can provide about this topic so I can learn more? I will have no choice about vaxing her as long as she's foster and not adopted. Once we adopt, we're clear, but until then she will be in close contact with my non-vaxed baby. Now I'm all freaked out, because MMR is coming up soon....:

I'm sure my non vaxed son was around my little sister after she had her shots like the MMR, my mom is very pro vax. my little sister is 2 and my brother is 3 and they are pretty much vaxed on schedule.

I'm not sure how I could keep my baby away from recently vaxed kids that I don't know--like at the playground or at the library. Friend's children, yes. Strangers, no. And even friends half the time have no idea what vaccine their child was given. I usually just ask how old their child is and if they're on schedule and then puzzle together what vaccine the child may have been given.

I think when you make the decision to not vaccinate, you accept the consequences which is that yes, your child when exposed to certain diseases may come down with them. The key is to know how to recognize the symptoms of these illnesses and have a plan of action (or inaction) for treating them. At least, that's my opinion.

My unvaxed 23 month old ds just started a toddler program at a preschool. Should I be worried?

Worse case scenario, he is around someone who gets the MMR and comes down with one of those viruses. Isn't that a good thing, okay not good but not a bad thing since then he can develop natural immunity? Or is it really bad because he could catch all three at the same time?

I'm glad this topic has come up again, I thought about it a while back but not since I enrolled him.

But in contrast to this, when you decide not to vaccinate, you're also accepting the responsibility to help protect them. I know when our midwife talked to us, she stressed that you have to be prepared to strengthen their immune systems and help keep them from as much exposure.

Just a different perspective. Of course, keeping them away from other kiddos/germs is easier said than done. Despite my efforts, we have an outbreak of hand/foot/mouth going in our house right now. And I have noooooooo idea where it came from!

Of course. I think the only thing you can realistically do is strengthen the immune system. I don't think it's realistic to try to keep them away from illness because they have to be in the world interacting.

Unless my child or family had a history of immune disorders, I would carry on business as usual, using universal precautions, and remind friends that I don't want to get together while their children are sick.

I wouldn't be concerned about the VPDs, but I have a new theory as well. I am starting a graduate program and about 2 weeks ago there was a massive uptake of incoming students getting measles vaxes. I never noticed this as a professor, but now everyone in my house is sick with colds. I SWEAR it's those darn people getting sick because they're fighting the live virus measles vaxes.
