But the dust on the bookshelves can contain the tetanus spores.

This thread comes just at the right time for me!!! My 5 y/o dd ended up in the ER yesterday after she sliced her foot open on a shell in 6 inches of mud at the ocean (in Maine). The doctors at the ER said they were going to give her the DTaP as she has not been immunized. I immediately called our naturopath (from the ER) who recommended NOT doing the vaccine as it was "too late" to have an effect as she had already sustained the injury. I am now wondering if we should do the TIG shot (tetanus immune globulin)? I'm actually surprised the hospital did not recommend that?!

Waiting for another call from the naturopath to see what to do from here but I have to admit I am a little freaked!

On a plus side the doc did clean the cut very well and stitched it back up so I'm assuming all that cleaning would help!

Ouch, that sounds painful! Did it bleed? If so, tetanus is very unlikely and it is quite rare. Infection is more of a concern than tetanus. Would be interesting to find out if tetanus spores live underwater.

Hi, yes, it did bleed profusely for a few minutes and we rinsed the mud off at a campsite spigot, wrapped it in a sterile bandage and headed to the ER which was about an hour away. They cleaned it really well and got some sand particles out and it bled again during that time.

After talking to the naturopath this morning I feel much better - she also said an "infection" would be much more likely than tetanus but told us what signs to look for so we could catch it early if she became infected with the disease.

I didn't know that...I got a piece of glass stuck in my foot, and I ended up getting a tetanus shot...
