Square Bale Oven

This could have gone in a few different forums.

Years ago while at a Guide camp we made cupcakes using oranges as the "liner" but we baked them in an straw bale. The cupcake-orange part I can do, I just cannot remember how they made the bale oven. Does anyone know?

Never heard of it, but am extremely interested in any responses you get!

Do you mean actually in the straw bale or in several bales stacked around the cooking area?

I am guessing putting a window over the top and a mirror or some metal to reflect the heat would do it.

There were 2 bales on the sides, 1 on the back, 1 on top & I think one on the bottom, but can't remember that for sure. We put the orange cupcakes inside the box that the bales made & placed another bale in front of that. There had to have been a heat source from somewhere, but that's what I can't remember. I don't know if tuna cans with cardboard & was placed under coffee tins would produce enough heat to make cupcakes, but if they were left in there all day maybe it would. That's about the only thing I can think of.
