Homebirth Midwife in DC?

Can anyone give me a recommendation (or list) for a home birth midwife who services the DC area? TIA!

BirthCare in Alexandria--CNMs who have a birth center and do home births--attend in DC. (I had my DC home birth with them and thought they were great--happy to share info if you want--just PM me.) Also, one of their midwives--Erin Fulham--just started her own home birth practice in DC. I talked to her recently about it and it sounds awesome. She does home visits on a little Vespa!

Tammi McKinley is in Arlington. She's one of my MWs and she's great. http://www.naturalbeginnings.org/ Also Birthcare, I hear a lot of good about them, though if you're looking for a waterbirth they may not be your best option. I know they have a policy at their birth center about only using the tub for pain management, not birthing. I'm not sure about their homebirth policies.

I am currently planning a home birth through Birth Care.

Here are a couple more midwives who work around the DC Metro area that offer home births:

Marilee Pinkleton http://www.tlcbirth.com

I've hired Erin & Mairi and am very very happy with their care thus far. I'd love to hear any personal experiences with either of them if anyone wants to pm me

Oh, and I've also heard fantastic things about Joey Pascarella -- http://sacredjourneymidwifery.com/contact

I very much wanted to interview her, but she wasn't taking clients for when I am due (late Dec).

I had a home birth with Joey in March and HIGHLY recommend her!

Midwives are illegal in DC, so the VA midwives listed won't be able to cross the river. I homebirthed in the District last Feb. with Karen Carr out of Baltimore, and ended up with her fantastic back-up Judy Metzner.

Good luck!

I don't believe it is illegal for a CNM to attend a homebirth in DC. (I can't speak to CPMs, etc.) I used the VA midwives (who are CNMs) for my DC birth, and they were certainly allowed to cross the river. The law may have changed since then...but I also spoke with a CNM who just started her practice based in DC a couple months ago, and as of our conversation, she was not illegal.

I think someone should clarify this- I may not have all the correct terminology, but as far as I know, CPM's may not be lisenced in DC and MD but they sure do practice (some from VA as well come to MD and DC). CNM's are legal in all states and DC, and attend births in DC, VA and MD.

It the CPMs decision to practice in DC or not. It is not licensed, nor is it legal. (Check the MANA website for a state-by-state chart for legality) I think some of the CPMs use the definition that it is "alegal" because the person who actually catches the baby is responsible for the birth. So instead of the CPM catching, the father, birth assistant, etc will do it. This is what I have heard. CNMs can legally attend homebirths in all three areas. I know there are people (like the many members of Birth Options Alliance) working on obtaining legal status for CPMs in DC. I have personally never heard of a CPM getting in trouble for working in DC, but I haven't really asked around either. I think everyone is kind of "don't ask, don't tell."

This is incorrect. CNM's who practice in birth centers, hospitals, and at home are completely legal in DC. A few examples of this type of midwife are the midwives who work at the DC Birth Center and Washington Hospital Center, as well as the midwives from Birthcare in Alexandria who attend homebirths. All perfectly legal.

CPM's have a more questionable legal status, ranging from illegal to alegal -- not just in DC, but in many other states as well. However, they still practice and are available for homebirths in DC.

Erin F delivered our baby girl when she was with BirthCare. I LOVE HER and should we be in the area when the time for #2 comes around there is no doubt that she'll be my #1 choice.

I am seeing Evelyn Muhlhan with Alternative Birth choices. The office is located in Catonsville and I live in Silver Spring and she is attending my homebirth in about 4 weeks....so far I really like her and her assistant Cassie, ill let you know how the actual birth goes in a couple weeks
Here is her website if you want to check it out, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt, hopefully it will this time!

jlizgar, how did your birth turn out? We're also in Silver Spring, and are searching for someone who can do homebirth, as our provider is not going to be on our insurance any more. Does Alternative Birth Choices have hospital privileges at any of the local hospitals here?

I'd love to know how it went, too! Hope you had a wonderful birth.

Yes, I do believe for the time being ABC has privileges at ?Mercy or one of the other Baltimore hospitals. I'm sure some on this forum know for sure.
