Getting Baby on the Breast?

My ds was 7 weeks early and is 3 weeks old now, so he's still pretty small. He was doing decently at attempting to nurse-although his efforts varied a lot from a full feeding once, usually part of a feeding, to almost nothing or refusing to nurse at all. However, he became quaranteened due to MRSA a few days ago and because of that, getting a nurse into his room to weigh him before and after a nursing session was so slow that it was totally messing up his feeds (It was taking an hour and a half to feed him because of all this waiting around for weights and bottles and...ugh). So he hasnt nursed at all for 3 days now.

He *should* be coming home tomorrow, I really really hope so, and then I want to work on breastfeeding some more, but he has a pretty crappy latch. I'm not sure if its due to his preemie status (he's up to 5.5 pounds), his bottles (the NICU uses Dr. Browns preemie bottles; I generally use Playtex Natural Latch bottles), or tongue tie. He definately has some degree of tongue tie, I just dont know if its actually effecting his ability to nurse-my 2nd had it bad and it killed our nursing relationship and she had to have it corrected at 4 years old because it was affecting her speech so bad, but my 3rd had it as well and it was never an issue. I'm assuming I should see a LC about all of this but I wont be able to until sometime next week. I havent seen a LC since he was born-I am only at the hospital in the evenings due to my dh having to work, and on the weekends, and the LCs are all gone by the time I get there.

Anywho, does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts?

wow, you have alot on your plate right now!! i know toungue tie can definantly affect latch, but so can all those other things! do you have anyone ITRW who can help you with getting his latch better? i imagine you would want to wait on any tougue clipping while he is recooping from the MRSA. do you have a pump? i would suggest frequent pumpings to keep up your supply, and if you need to suppliment get an sns.

I'm also nursing a preemie albeit with a nipple shield. It was really frustrating in the beginning because it would take her so long and she would fall asleep so much. She's 6 weeks old now (she was 5 weeks early) and things were just starting to get better for us before I came back to work this week. I was told by other preemie moms that things didn't really get easier until their baby got closer to full term. Hang in there mama! I've wanted to give up almost everyday since she came home but so far everyday I've decided to keep going. Its so hard in the beginning.

Well he doesnt actually have a MRSA infection, he just tested positive from his nose swab. So he's quaranteened to keep it from spreading to other preemies (he and about 4 other babies in the nicu tested positive). He isnt being sent home yet now, due to some little desat on Tuesday I wasnt told about. I am worried that all this not nursing at ALL (he was only nursing once a day as it were) is going to make it impossible to get him on.

He doesnt need any supplementation, although he is being given a human milk fortifier right now. I'm not sure yet if he is going to continue that or not. And yep, I have 2 pumps at home and 1 at the hospital, so I'm set there! lol (I have a Lactina on borrow and a PIS as well)

I don't have any advice, but one of my best friends pumped for 1 month, every day, while her baby was in the NICU. It was rough.

He's now 17 months and she's still nursing.

Hope that story brightens your day.
