i was trying to get away with the jarred food because i have a hard time getting organic sweet potatoes around here, but you're definitely right about that. i need to just start making the hike to the organic grocer more often and freezing the purees that i make. she never seemed to be reacting to it, but i think with her increasing sensitivity to everything, your point makes a lot of sense! i hadnt thought about that in a while. thank you!!

I hope this question doesn't sound ignorant, but I'm curious how you ended going to a DAN practitioner for your baby with food sensitivities. Or are you also noticing early autism signs? Or is it the gut reaction connection.

I ask b/c I find myself WAY more worried about autism with dd than I was with either of her brother's even though she shows no signs. But the gut reaction connection worries me. It never crossed my mind to take her to a DAN dr.

While I can't speak for someone else, I think the reason DAN docs appeal to those with food intollerances/allergies is because they are so knowledgeable about these things - a rare thing as we all know. Many autistic children see HUGE improvement in symptoms once starting a GF/CF diet and DAN docs are supposed to be expert in understanding how various foods affect the gut, the brain, the whole body....in myriad ways...and how to navigate the journey of elimination diets, etc. Maybe this is all such basic info I didn't even need to write it, I have no idea, but it's just my 2 cents.

exactly what mary said and more. i dont notice signs of autism per say. what i do notice is that when she reacts to foods her whole personality and behaviors change dramatically. my sweet, smiling, blissfully joyful dd becomes physical with me, especially with bf. she hits, scratches, pinches, kicks, pulls my hair and hers. she only does this when reacting. she throws tantrums sometimes and becomes much more irritable. also, when i cut the gluten, her physical mobility and language skills took off. she really started trying to crawl and walk more within 2 days of cutting the gluten ( i had cut casein in the very beginning).
mostly though, i starting reading about autism, adhd, asthma and food allergies and how they can all be connected. i read "healing the new childhood epidemics'' by kenneth bock and new i needed to try a dan! doc. cant be any worse than every other doc we've seen hopefully.

Also, if you're doing jarred baby food, they usually contain ascorbic or citric acid, which are usually derived from corn. I'm not sure if that could explain any of her reactions. . .
luckily earth's best is just org sweet potatoes and water! i just read the label again.

Thanks for the answers to my question.

I recently received a brochure for a continuing ed course on nutritional treatments for autism and (even though professionally it has no relevence) I'm seriously considering going to help dd, but it's expensive and I'm not sure how relevent it will be.

Anyhow, I had planned to find a NP or the like once the allergy appt has passed. Maybe I'll look into a DAN dr. Do you all feel like you've gotten useful info from the visits you've been to?

i've only just seen him for the first time this past week, but i found him to be extremely intelligent, warm and open to figuring this thing out with me. he seemed to know more about gut healing than i do and recommended all of the supplements etc that we all take. he was totally supportive of breastfeeding and natural remedies.
he was totally unlike any doctor i've ever seen, but not to the point where i could forget that he is an md ( in other words, i am not afraid that he doesnt know what to do if some extreme illness pops up, he can prescribe meds or whatever else is necessary but doesnt always jump to Rxs first).
why dont you give a dan! doc a shot? at the very least that person will be aware of the impact of diet on immunity and be used to gut-sensitive children. it is entirely too exhausting and scary being the only person in your dc's life who is educated about their health

Gastrocrom

Hi,
I had a period where I was allergic to e-v-e-r-ything, and after 30lb loss in 2 mos and losing all my breastmilk I tried Gastrocrom. I had no ill effects to it, and after about a week (less?) of taking it i was able to eat much more freely. I believe it stopped the release of mast cells and allowed healing.
Good luck in your decision!

wow, thank you so much for your post! that is very encouraging!! we decided to try it so hopefully my ped will call it in to our pharmacy today...
i'm so glad for you that the gastrocrom helped! what kind of allergies did you have? did your dc have any? what types of food did you have left to eat? did you do any other gut healing or allergy prevention measures? how are your allergies now?

yesterday we were having a horrible day. dd was inconsolable and teething and i think reacting to chick peas that i was ok eating for a little while now, but now apparently am not. anyway, our gastrocrom came and it was really not a good day to try something because how would i know if she were reacting, kwim? i just decided that i needed to try it anyway, because we hadnt slept in days and we are both doing pretty crappy.
i gave it to her and about 2 hours later, she was really good. could be a coincidence, cause we still didnt sleep well last night, but a little better than before. today, she is perfect. perfect. sweet, loving, happy, smiling, talking, nose is clear, teething seems less.... i'm not saying the gastrocrom did this, but maybe it did. and if it didnt, it didnt hurt her either:.
on a side note, i took it too and my milk is going down. so i wont be able to continue it, but i want to keep giving it to her.
