Anyone with SPD?

I am in so much pain right now. I walked the kids to the park and pool this morning. While in the pool, my 1.5 yo decided to play dare devil (which is not like him at all) and run away from me and jump in the deep end. I went after him and I felt a horrible pain in my pubic bone. It went away while in the water, but then hauling them home in the wagon was a very bad experience. My 3 yo got out and helped pull his brother and our bags, but I was crying by the time we got home. We just took a 2 hour nap, and I cannot walk.

I remember someone here talking about SPD (Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction -- where your pelvis separates a bit at the pubic bone) before, and after reading the descriptions of the pain and location I know that is what I am experiencing. Anyone have any pain management suggestions -- especially for labor??!!

:

Personally I'm hoping it'll help labor since it means all the ligaments and things are super loose.

I'm lucky enough to have no problems walking, it's getting out of bed that's an ordeal.

About a week ago my pubic bone was actually feeling a lot better . . . then yesterday it really, really started hurting again, and what's worse now is that my legs are in major pain, too.

Guess that doesn't really help, sorry! Just wanted to commiserate.

I had that same kind of pain, still do. I'm taking motrin and plan to call my doctor about it.

My doc said it should go away shortly after labor . . . obviously, it doesn't always (see PP!!!).

For me ice feels really good, if only for the time I actually have the ice on it, but it does provide some temporary relief which can be really nice right before bed.

I tore mine years ago and it healed incorrectly, so it's excrutiating everytime the relaxin builds in my system during a pregnancy. Once I hit the third trimester, there are times that it is unbearable-like now. I teach yoga and have education in kinesiology, so I've studied this a lot. There are no muscles that transverse it, so there's no way to strengthen or stabilize. There is energy work and acupuncture. I've seen mild differences after treatments, and anything at all that takes the edge off is a relief. While you're pg, keep your legs together when rolling over in bed. Try to avoid lunging positions or opening of the pelvis too much or in any uneven way. For me, the majority pain clears up once the baby is born. Then, I just get twinges when I'm not moving mindfully until the relaxin has worn off. As long as you are careful, keep your pelvis, back, abs, and legs strong, it will get better and be less painful in subsequent pregnancies, too, if you keep in shape.

During labor, it probably won't be an issue. Unless you feel the urge to do a lot of lunging. If you do, try to do them on the birthing ball or straddling the corner of a chair. This gives just enough support to allow for the opening without the instability. You may feel a little "bruised" kind of sensation after giving birth, but nothing nearly as bad as when you tweak it like you did while pg. I find that the moms I've dealt with (and my own experiences) who have spd and labor do just fine and have an easy time opening the pelvic girdle for the passage of the baby. So, may be a potential positive??

It's really hard to be mindful of your movements while chasing down your kids.
Good luck and hope you feel better (and me right along with you 'cause my ps f'ing hurts sometimes.

I delivered this morning! : My midwife really worked with me to find positions that were comfortable. She had me in the birthing pool when he dropped down below my pubic bone, which meant less stress on the joint. Then, when it came time to push she suggested my side or all fours to avoid stress on the area. I am somewhat sore still, but nothing like yesterday!

Chiropractic is the only thing that really helped me. I have gone once a week since 30 weeks and plan/hope on going in early labor to make sure everything is lined up.
