Filing a claim may increase your insurance premium but shouldn't affect your coverage. If a police report was filed and you were cited/ticketed, your insurance premium may go up even if you don't file the claim. Tickets stay on your record for 3-5 years so you could potentially see an increase for that amount of time. It is possible that if you've been with the same company for many years the insurance co. might forgive this accident. Companies have different rules and ways of handling these things so you'd have to contact them directly to see what would happen to your rates.

Who was at fault?

If it was me, and there was no other damage I would pay the $900 out of pocket to avoid the increased insurance cost (unless I knew it was being reported anyway).

It it was the other driver, I would give them the option to give me $900 and not report it to their insurance to save them from taking the hit on insurance. Otherwise I would expect their insurance to pay.

The last fender bender I was in was like $900 in damage for me plus 2 carseats and like $1200 in damage for them plus at least two car seats, so we took the insurance hit.
