Lay-chay.

At least that's how they said it at LLL meetings.

We have no coke here. :

We do, however, have A & W Root Beer for a science experiment that will be immediately followed by ice cream floats!

I've been pronouncing it wrong all these years?!

I thought it was the Spanish "leche" as in "milk"!

I think it is meant to be the Spanish pronunciation, the leh is more of the short e in bed, same for the second e. LEH-CHE

Yes, that is how I pronounce it.

That's what I was taught in both formal classes and by my neighbors.

Of course, I've found up north that no one pronounces Spanish words properly. There's a town not too far away from me called Palos. I'm the only person I know that says "Pah-los". Everyone else insists it is "Pay-less".

It's in between the two, really. Like the "e"s in "comprende" or the french "Le".

It's the Spanish word for milk. E in Spanish is sort of in between the short E and long A in English.

Well, she asked how I pronounced it. Not how it is supposed to be pronounced.

Ah, I see I always though dulce de leche ... leche, but no one can pronounce dulce de leche right either!

At my first Florida LLL meeting I was surprised to hear it pronounced like you all are more or less describing it...because in Canada I had only heard it referred to as 'LESH', which is how it would be pronounced in French (where leche means 'to lick'). Mind you I didn't attend any meeting there, so perhaps they've got it right and it's just the public who puts the French spin on it!

actually, the letter E in spanish is always pronounced like the long A in english. the vowel sounds in spanish never change. they can be slightly affected by other vowels in the case of dipthongs, but the schwa does not exist in spanish. i had many, many, many teachers instill this in me.

i pronounce leche as: LAY-chay, with accent on the first syllable, both vowels as the long A sound.

Gosh, I don't mean to get all funny about this, but I'm a native speaker and it's not a long a. It's a short e. It always drove me crazy that my uncle was called HOSE A instead of Jo-seh by English speakers. I think there's been some sort of confusion with the french e sound in ballet.
