No Pushing Baby holding Cord

Have you ever heard of a mother being told to wait to push because the baby is holding the umbilical cord? Is that a reason to do a c section? I just heard of this for the first time ever today. I'm thinking yeah right any excuse for a section, but honestly I don't know maybe it's legit.

I was taking care of a lady once that everytime she had a contx the baby had a really long dcell that took awhile to come up. After awhile of this continueing, the dr said the baby wasn't tolerating labor and they decided to do a c/s. Anyway... when the baby came out, she was holding her cord and squeezing it with every contx but she was fine with no problems.

I don't know how you could tell that ahead of time. By the time the baby is born out to his hands, it would be too late to section. Maybe the baby was holding the cord after the section and they attributed the decels to that? Beats me...

Same thing happened with my vbac....except he had the cord wrapped around his leg....his hb was decelerating sometimes with contractions but they absolutely did not know why until he was born. I know they were wondering if maybe he was too big. Apparently, anything touching the cord like that can cause babys hb to go wonky sometimes but they told me on its own it is no reason to do a c/s.

heart rates can decelerate with cord compression, but it's the severity of the dip and the return to baseline that is important. it's very different than, say, decelerations from uteroplacental insufficiency.

heart rate during pushing is going to go down...it's smart to listen for a return to baseline after a pushing contraction.

then again, any dip in heart rate, no matter the pattern, is cause for cesarean in hospitals.
