Are there any? I've looked around online a bit but haven't really found anything that interested me or in my area. So I figured I would ask on here. TIA

I know there's an unschooling group, but I forget the name of it. Have you checked with Illinois HOUSE? There are groups in Lake County, you can e-mail HOUSE or call to find out where.
Good luck!

Off the Beaten Path is the unschooling group I think. I believe they have a Yahoo group. There is also a Lake Co House group.

The unschooling group sounds interesting... unfortunately we aren't unschoolers. I wonder if they let others join their group or if it's strictly for them...
I did look into the HOUSE group and signed up for one on a yahoo board last year. I was sent an email to send money (I understand the need for a fee) but didn't have the cash at the time. My trial membership lapsed.. I guess I could try signing up again.
Have either of you been involved in either of these groups?

I know someone in the Off the Beaten Path group--couldn't remember the name!
I belong to a HOUSE group in Arlington Heights--we have Unschoolers and curriculum users--we like both kinds!
How far North are you in Lake County?

I live in Round Lake which is close to Gurnee... I think Arlington Heights is a bit far from here.
If you don't mind my asking what sort of things do you do with your homeschool group?

We have Park Day where the kids play together for hours. We try to do 2 field trips a month--into Chicago, or area museums or nature centers.
Every 3 months we have a Parent's Meeting that has morphed into a Culture Night where we all make food from a certain country's cuisine (we've done Italy, Spain, Russia and Japan) and the kids present a fact, or show a flag or do a national dance of that country. Whatever and however and if they would like to present something to the group.
In colder weather, we still meet for free at a gym and have the use of that and a craft/game room once a week. I teach kids tennis through September and my friend will teach anyone to knit or crochet whenever.
Our group is mostly for social time for the kids and the parents--we talk a lot about a lot. We plan out the field trips one season at a time--we're up to November now. We exchange ideas about homeschooling, have discussions about different approaches to homeschooling.
Lots of the kids are enrolled in classes together at dance studios and acting classes and gymnastics academies. Many used to go to a Great Books Discussion Group together at a local library.
We're a fairly active group.

Hi Wendie! For some reason, I thought you lived in Kenosha (I was probably disctracted and chasing after Camryn). Nice to see you around here. There are several people in the Lake country AP group who are either homeschooling or (like me) thinking about it for the future so we're definitely not alone.
Did you hear that the cafe is closing. I was nearly in tears when I found out

I'm in Round Lake Park as well... how fun! I haven't found many AP mama's in my area at all.
I had a look at the Lake Co. AP group ages ago (before I got pregnant with my last) and it seemed to be more mamas with little ones/babies (obviously now I have a baby again but at the time I didn't) and I didn't seem to have much in common with the group except that I was AP.
I think I'm going to try and join the IL H.O.U.S.E group again.. it sounds like something my boys might really enjoy. They're the ones I'm interested in getting involved with something not so much the baby. All she needs right now are my boobs and her some play time with her brothers.

There's a posting about it on the blog on their site. They seem to be another casualty of the economy and rising food prices. I am so very bummed and I wish we could all petition them to stay open but it seems pretty final. They're closing on Sunday. Suffice it to say that I'll be there almost every day this week until I go out of town for the weekend.
And thanks for explaining my Kenosha link.. I thought I had gone insane. I bet I've asked you this same question a thousand times. I still seem to have baby brain -- or is that toddler brain now? UGH!
