Pertussis Booster (for parents) Question

I read...somewhere (in a magazine in a waiting room of some sort) that parents should get the pertussis booster, whether or not they are having their child vaccinated for pertussis, because kids usually get it from their parents.

My six month old has not gotten the pertussis shot, and will not be getting it anytime soon.

Since he's been born, I have asked at my midwife's office (she works with an OB) - they don't carry the booster. The pediatrician doesn't carry it (though I'm not sure how I would've gotten that through my insurance anyway!) My primary care doc is an Internal Med doctor who has a high percentage of elderly patients, so I thought she would have it. Nope. She said that nobody asks for it, so they don't keep it on hand. She suggested I get it at the health department. Here's a surprise, they don't have it either.

I had my dad ask at his doctor's office, since we live in his house and he agreed to get the booster because of that. He sees a family doctor. They don't have it.

How in the world am I supposed to get the booster if I can't find anyone to give it to me? Could a doctor order just a couple doses of it? And at this point, since my son is 6 months old, not in daycare, not going to daycare anytime soon, is it worth still looking for it for the adults in the household? (For the record, my 3 year old got the pertussis series, because I didn't do much research back then.)

Any insight would be appreciated!!

The brand name is Adacel. It comes in a box of 10 doses so a doc would have to order at least that. Sometimes they can write a prescription & certain pharmacies will fill it if you decide you want it. You might search this forum for "Adacel" for more info. or check out the archives:

This sales tactic really bothers me.

Vaccinating against pertussis does NOT prevent transmission, so there is NO point in vaccinating parents if the goal is protecting children.

Just a heads up...this is a complete marketing ploy since the P portion of any of the Pertussis vaccinations does not prevent you from getting it or transmitting it.

It helps against the toxins created by pertussis if you get it, but will do absolutely nothing to prevent you from getting it or passing it to your children.

I really do not understand how this can be marketed at the best option to protect your child when it is not preventing transmission...
I have never checked my titres, but had WC when I was about 5 and am now so relieved that I have immunity and cannot pass it on (working on an assumption here, but so far DS is cough free)... this seems to be the way it works best - have the disease as a child and have life long immunity and not be at risk of infecting babies.... sorry for long story - but this issue gets me rather :

Of course every person is free to make decisions that they feel are the best for their families. It would just be more ideal if the facts were laid out and parents were not being scared into making decisions - that's it for now - sorry for my little vent.

That's why I love this board so much; there is always someone (or several someones) who have the right answer!

I won't stress about this anymore! Thanks everyone!
