My DH just took a job teaching at the high school in Townsend, and well be moving closer to that area soonish. Any ideas about where we could rent an apt?

NOT IN TOWNSEND!!! There is a very high drop out/drug use rate there. I grew up a few towns south and knew of many 'not so nice' kids. Check out Groton, Dunstable, Littleton - same size towns but not as trashy. (sorry to anyone who lives in townsend - but its just my personal experience)

Groton, and Dunstable will be a little more expensive. I live at the north end of Shirley and it's a short drive to Townsend. Very pretty around here.

well, the kids will be right up DH's alley then. Hah! He was teaching in Westford...too many rich kids smoking up and such...he was always trying to get them to stop using. I guess this is part of what they meant when they told him that there is a bit of a culture clash at the school--it's a regional high school for Townsend, Pepperell, and Ashby.
Shirley's cool--I wouldn't mind that. Dunstable is REALLY expensive, and I can never find a pet friendly listing in Littleton that we can afford.
any thoughts on lunenburg or leominster?

Lunenburg is pretty, but I don't know what the rental situation is like. They have a great library and a great playground (not that your wee one will need that for awhile!). It's a nice, quiet town. Leominster is, of course, bigger and more urban. I find it a terrible pain to drive around in Leominster, but I bet it's a lot easier to find a rental there, and there are some lovely neighborhoods, if you're into having neighbors

Townsend is my hometown. My folks still live there! I have no idea about apartments, though. I don't think there are many in town. Maybe Pepperell or even Amherst or Nashua, NH. Townsend is fairly rural, but it isn't far from some bigger towns if that's you're thing.
Erin, you must have only met the kids that left town
All of my friends (and most of the people I knew!) were/are really great, non drug using, non drop out people. Every town has "those kids" but I wouldn't characterize the whole highschool population that way.
Of course, I graduated NMRHS in 1997, so things could have changed since then. I still think Townsend is a nice little town. We have some wonderful family friends and nice towny traditions.

Lunenburg or Pepperell would work. The playground behind the Lunenburg library is great, and there's a structure for littler ones. My 15 month old has a ball climbing the stairs and using the small slides. I know there are often apartments in Pepperell, I have family in the town. I'd be cautious of the Pepperell elementary schools though, they're not the best.

I live in Townsend and I love it!
There are a few apartment places and condo type areas.
I'd check into renting a house if you can swing it.
I agree with Rebecca (woodchick) there are "those kids" in every school system.
