? about tomato allergy and tomatillos

This is probably a strange question, but I want to make some mexican food! :
Ok, I'm on a top 8 elim. diet for my 7 week old, and we also took out tomatoes as she MAY be having a reaction to them (everytime I had them it was with another allergen, but she always has green poop within minutes, which she doesn't with those allergens, say wheat pasta, minus tomato. So its out to be safe for now.) I was craving some salsa today and saw the green kind, verde sauce, is not made with tomatoes, but with tomatillos. So I came home to goggle, and I see that its not a tomato but closely related as a member of the nightshade family. But aren't potatoes nightshades as well? She does fine with potatoes as far as I can tell....
So if anyone happens to know anything about tomatillos, especially in relation to a tomato allergy, that would be VERY helpful, and I'd give you a prize if I could (sorry, feeling silly)

Yes, potato is a nightshade too but someone can have an issue with one nightshade and not another - it doesn't have to be all or nothin'. I can't imagine that a tomatillo would be okay if you are avoiding tomatoes. To me, they are basically the same thing. I LOOOOVE mango salso - could you do that? Mango, onion, jalapeno, etc. It's really good and you can just leave out the tomato.

good idea about the mango salsa! I didn't realize how much I love tomatoes until I cut them out! Seriously, I think they were the hardest of the allergens, even harder than gluten! I miss ketchup, and BBQ sauce, and chili, and pasta sauce and..... And its so hard to replace too, at least with things like gluten they make GF flour, or nuts they make SunButter.....you can't really make tomato free ketchup!
Anyways, enough of my whining, I'm going to make some mango salsa tomorrow! :

If you can have red peppers, roast and puree them into a sauce with olive oil and the Italian spices and eat that on pasta and pizza. You can make white chili, too, with some safe green enchilada sauce as the base, with white beans, ground turkey, green chiles, corn (if you can have it) and chili powder, cumin, etc.

Peppers are a nightshade, but like DM said, your problem may not be with nightshades, per se, but with those specific vegetables.

My dd is sensitive to tomatillos but not tomatoes...

We have a wicked good time with mango salsa around here!
The last batch was one huge mango, 2 bell peppers, 1/4 red onion, a glug of apple cider vinegar, 2 splashes of olive oil, and some sea salt. Then I added a couple of tomatoes as an afterthought.

I'm allergic to tomatoes and seem to be fine with tomatillos and other groundcherries. Be careful of the salsa, though, a lot of canned salsa verde seems to contain tomatoes, too!

I really like the Trader Joe's salsa verde. Yum.

As for catsup, you can find banana sauce at Asian markets (it's a Filipino thing, so make sure your shop stocks Filipino food!). It's different, but tasty. I haven't found it without artificial coloring, though, and I can't find a tomato-free recipe online. I need to pester some friends.

For sauces, there's Nomato products. I can't have carrots, so I don't know how Nomato sauces taste.

I do white pizzas, pesto pizzas, and caramelized onion/roasted red pepper sauce pizzas.

For bbq, mustardy vinegar sauces are great.

Mango-peach salsa (homemade) is great on tuna kabobs.

And the new smoked tabasco is my secret weapon.

Hmm.. I have a mango in the fridge.
For some reason it never occurred to me to make my own mango salsa. Duh.
Totally off-topic post, but I'm glad I read this thread.

I have recipes for cranberry, gooseberry and grape ketchups (along with various tomato ones). PM me with which one you'd like.
There's also one for Plum Ketchup in the The Allergy Self-Help Cookbook, I believe.
