Just a little note from the Netherlands. My mom gave birth to 4 children, only my youngest sister was delivered in the hospital (labour had to be induced). All of her 3 sisters, my aunts, gave birth at home. My youngest aunt is a midwife.
Me? I had to give birth to my son at the hospital (I have a mild form of Spina Bifida).
All went extremely well: the pain was bearable, I did not want any painmeds and I pushed my little boy out in a whopping 18 minutes. So yes: next time (if there is going to be a next time) I want to give birth at home.
Over here, it's still normal to give birth at home. I hate it how people are more and more hospitalized, thinking that it is 'safer' to give birth at the hospital. I absolutely detest this new thing of having a planned c-section (that is: if there's no medical need for it!).
I applaud you for wanting to give birth at home! I think it is great! I can only imagine how hard it must be to do what you want in a society that is so not used to, or even opposed to this way of welcoming new life to this world. Giving birth is a wonderful experience, hope you'll all enjoy it.
Saskia.
