How many breaks do your kids get?

My kids are going to a private school this year and they get a long weekend every month, sometimes it's a 4 day weekend. Is that the average or is that odd? They get 17 days at Christmas and 10 days for March break as well (including weekends). We used to homeschool so I'm kind of clueless! I'm happy about it but my MIL who works for the public school board thinks it's horrible.

Does she elaborate? Why is it horrible? If they can do the same thing and have more breaks, more power to them!

Generally the kids get a long weekend or more at least once a month.

September - Labor day weekend

October - Fall break (4 day weekend)

November - Thanksgiving break (9 days, including weekends)

December/January - Winter break (15 days, including weekends)

January - Martin Luther King day weekend

February - none, but there could be weather days

March - Spring break (9 days, including weekends)

April - Easter weekend, unless there have been weather days used earlier

May - Memorial day weekend

This is a public school that starts Aug 25 and ends June 5.

Well, my dd, also in private school gets breaks every month... all months but May have 2 long weekends because of school breaks, holidays, teacher in-services or PT conferences . She still goes to school 180 days a year just like the public schools do. I bet you go 180 days, too.

December-January they get 17days off starting the 20th & ending the 5th. They also get Monday Jan 26th off for a professional development day

I counted and it's 182 days but the school is in the country and there are usually a number of snow days. I don't know if they have to add more days if there are snow days or what.

That's kinda vague. Ultimately, what matters is what you think about it. I don't think they would go below the minimum required by law. If a school needs to go over the minimum, maybe they aren't as efficient. Of course there's always more than one way to look at it.

Why is it horrible? The school is required to do a certain amount of school days per year so they aren't doing anything illegal. I don't see what the point is in your MIL being upset over it.
