mastocytosis (uticaria pigmentosa in particular)

So, I was reading another thread here (http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=953929) where mastocytosis was mentioned.

I'd never heard of it before, but I knew DD1's former FP Doc had mentioned the importance of helping the mast cells calm down, so he had us on a ton of Vitamin C and quercitin. So, this caught my attention.

I started reading about mastocytosis and looking at pictures. This picture, in particular, looks like DD1's rash. It is a picture of a girl with Uticaria Pigmentosa, a form of mastocytosis.

Apparently there is a urine test to test for increased levels of histamine in the urine. I'm going to request we do this. If it comes back "positive" then we will consider the skin biopsy... Obviously, a trip to the derm is in our near future. *sigh*

Our background info:

A little over a month ago, DD1 came down with a mystery rash. It lasted about 10 days and went away. We figured it was viral and thought nothing more of it. About a week later, it came back and worse. It's been over two weeks now and she still has it, though it seems to be fading? It's hard to tell.

We took her to our new FP and she's stumped. Says it's probably viral, but it's weird that it left and came back. No one else in the house has this rash, BTW.

Interestingly enough, during this second round, as the rash peaked in intensity, her eczema completely cleared. As the rash started to look faded, the eczema came back. [with little to no intervention from us; not dietary changes, etc] DH theorizes, perhaps if the mast cells are collecting in a rash all over her body, they are less able to inflame her wrists, neck & elbows (her chronic eczema areas). I don't know.

If this is her diagnosis, many things start to make sense... I mean, I'm not wishing a disease on her, but it would be nice to have an idea of what's going on so we can try to help her. Right now, we're on a serious ED and are being fiends about avoiding cross-contamination and any potential contact irritants.

I guess I'm just thinking "out loud" here. Does anyone have experience with mastocytosis/uticaria pigmentosa? or another condition that was suspected to be?

Just grasping at straws here, but, anything to help my kiddo.

Interesting. Are you sure that it's uticaria pigmentosa, or could it be tinea versicolor? There are a couple of ways that t.v. can present -- here are some pictures:

Thanks for the link.

Hmm. Her rash doesn't match the one in the pictures on the page. ETA: but I'm going to go do some googling now and check it out. ETA2: Okay, from all the pictures I saw on google images, it's definitely NOT T.V. But, how great would that have been to finally have an answer (and suggestion for treatment!).

It's hard to describe. It's a mish mash of rashes. There are red spots everywhere. Some are flat and some are raised and "pimply". Some are swollen and hurt her. Then, there are the brownish-purpleish spots. And the hive patches. *sigh*

Here are some pictures of the rash I took back in late July (at the beginning of the first, more mild round). It looks much worse now.
